just the ability to fit the connector in a different size space. Larger = more robust etc, probably cheaper to implement, mini is just used on thinner/space concerned devices.
As the others have said, I'm not aware of any difference at all!
On my Dell 21:9 it has both DP and Mini-DP but both of my cables are DP to Mini-DP cables, so I have to remember when I'm using my Macbook-Air that despite it being the mini-display port I'm plugging into the computer, it's the Display Port input on the monitor and vice-versa on my Gaming PC.
I guess it might be good to avoid that confusion if starting from scratch That's just the jumble of cables I ended up with for some strange reason!
