Hi guys

Was just looking to build a system for a friend of mine, she's currently got an ageing AMD Athlon system that's a decent enough life but it's starting to fall apart now.

I was looking at what I could build for around the £300 mark, and I noticed the Atom boards:

Mating that with an In-Win Mini-ITX case looks like a neat little system, should handle web browsing, Office Suite etc no problem, yes? Pretty sure she isn't doing anything computationally heavy on it.

Hello, I have been planning to build such a machine for a while now but because I needed the extra cpu power I went for an Athlon II x4 based system instead. I recommend however, specifically to Intel ATOM based boards....not to go with anything less than an ATOM 330. If she is going to be view HD video and youtube.com then an Intel ATOM 330 and ION gpu at least. The two best boards I've seen are made by Asus and Zotac. There are pleanty of case makers that make great and cheap itx cases...have a look on google. Maybe even Overclockers could order some in?

That review backs up what I said really. The Intel Atom 230 is too underpowered. The 330 is still underpowered by comparison to even the slowest desktop processors available now. However, I think the 330 is about the same speed as a 1.6ghz to 2.0ghz Pentium M. The second core does help a lot and combined with the ION gpu it should be adequate for most office tasks.

However, if you look out for an Intel Celeron based board that will give you more power and there are a few in the ITX form factor.
