MINI MOTO MAYHEM

Wow two weeks, Thats gotta feel endless! :)

It does grind and it's difficult to resist the temptation and try to go too early with it. However it does mean I can spend more time over the little things which make a big difference to the whole build.

I've been looking at one of the features that's niggling me at the moment, I have a solution but that's for another update

The 3D printed Mayhems logo has been niggling me a bit, The whole thing painted kinda looses its 3D effect, you'll see what I mean in this pic

picture.php

So I sanded down the front face of the lettering, but needed lifting. So I decided to have a look at gilding it. I ordered a small kit from e-bay. The kit came with 10 gold sheets, some glue, a brush and a simple set of instructions.

picture.php

I applied the glue with a cotton bud and left it to become tacky

picture.php

The leaf is applied and I decided to "stipple" the leaf onto the lettering, I think it's a nice effect

picture.php

The result looks something like this ...

picture.php

It really lifts the 3D image, at the moment it has been lacquered and is now drying and will be polished when dry, in the mean time I have the other 3D printed Mod With Me logo to do, I have talked to sander and we have agreed on doing the sides of the M's

Over the past few months I have been collecting some airbrush stuff, With the cost of the hardware taking out a lot of funds, I've had to scrimp and get the things I need for this build a bit at a time.

So here's what I have, which is enough to get me started ...

picture.php

Eventually I will get some stenciling material and a stencil burner as I really got into the airbrush side of things .... so expect some airbrushed cases soon(ish)
Luckily Mod With Me provided me with 30 droplet stencils to do the job I had in mind, I ended up using 50 :D So here's the very first thing I have ever airbrushed ..

picture.php

I'm happy (more than happy) with the result and it's exactly what I wanted, here's the tank.

picture.php

and a wider shot .. you'll notice the front mudguard has been painted, this has been done with a blue flake ... It didn't quite look like how I thought it would, but it's quite an interesting finish and ties in with the droplets on the body work.

picture.php

Here's the mWm logo, I did apply some gold leaf to the sides but it didn't quite look right, So I gave it a light dusting with blue flake and it has lifted the logo nicely.

picture.php

The logo will be touched up on the edges and will look great on the panel. I have done all the body work but I won't be sharing with you guys until the final photo's (BWAHAHAHAAHAA)

I don't do renders or detailed plans, I like my builds to develop but makes getting sponsorship difficult (quite understandable)
I know exactly what you mean mate, I've got an idea in my head and know what I want the finished product to look like. But I never make drawings or do designs, the image just sort of evolves in my mind as parts come together and get built up. I think that's the best way as you can change things as you can and make improvements as you discover better ways of doing things.
The build's looking superb mate, that's definitely going to be the star of the show whe ya mates come round :D

This really does look absolutely amazing, my favourite project log in a while.

Thanks Hyburnate, I'm liking how this is all coming together. Glad you like :)

It's difficult to sell an idea, I guess having a render helps but I have been lucky that the two guys who did sponsor me had some vision and imagination.

Some updates on the some of the small jobs that I've been doing. Lots of little things and just tying up loose ends

First up is the front mudguard, I'd originally planned to put a ROG logo there, but on second thoughts I thought that it's taking away some attention from the guys that actually sponsored the build ...so I chose something non-PC related and used a Ducati Course shield. The paint finish is a blue flake over the white ... I'm glad I done this small part first as I just don't think that finish all over the body work would look right ... It's ok for the mudguard.

Next up is the fans, I'm going for the 80mm Cooler Master ones... had a big hunt around and found these items, I like these as they're different than the usual generic design of the shrouds that most fans use

picture.php

These were given a dusting with blue flake just to make the matt black a bit more interesting...
SPOT THE DIFFERENCE

picture.php

I have now got the RAM, I'm going with Corsair Dominators, Nice understated design and they'll give out some subtle lighting around the M'board

picture.php

Really like these, but tricky to find the right ones .... Had to check the Vendor list in the ASUS manual

picture.php

Next up is the dash...

I made a template to fit the curve inside the nose cone, difficult to get right and found it easier to fold the card in half, so that it kept both sides equal.

The display was torn down to its basic screen and I made a template of that too. This was to get the holes in the right place .. eventually the template was transfered onto the acrylic and cut out

picture.php

Here's how it turned out

picture.php

and with the display on ....

picture.php

It just needs fitting to the bike now ... getting closer :)

OOPS nearly forgot about this photo,

I've revised the loop around the M'board and also fitted the break out point, the tray has been painted and lacquered and also I have started to look at the last bit of cabling. I'm using some clips that keep all the lines nice and tidy, those clips will be stuck onto a bracket and will keep them all in place.
Also the ram has been slotted in :)

Absolutely incredible build. I cannot believe that you're actually making this work.

My only gripe is the GTX 660. With such high end components and lavish attention to detail it seems odd to use such a mid range GPU.

Thanks fishingcat, I hear what you're saying about the GTX 660, There was some very good reasons for choosing this card

1. The PSU is only 450Watts, A bigger card would draw more power and bring the PSU to its knees (PSU chosen for size)

2. The price, I was going to chop down the card, I don't think I would have been so brave with a £400 card.

3. Only one 6pin PCI power connector, Makes the cable management that lil bit easier.

It would be nice to have fitted a higher spec card :)

To ease your gripe here's a pic I shared on FaceBook ...

Been reading this from the start, fantastic build mate wish I could have the skill and vision to build something like this.

Your nearly there! And it's looking brilliant

Loving the work thats gone into this, seen it on BT as well, really well done :)

Thanks coolamasta, much appreciated. There has been a hell of a lot of work put into this, it's been constant for the last 6months ... I don't want to total up the amount of hours that has gone into this ... so nice to know thank you Coolamasta.

Cheers chris, I'm sure there's a build in there somewhere ... if this manages to inspire someone else to have a go then it's done its job ... have a go Chris you'll be surprised how quickly things will pick up

Yeah it's nearly there, I still have a few surprises up my sleeve.

UPDATE 3/11/13

With the dash made. it needed to be fitted to the bike. This was done with a couple of simple brackets which were bolted in place. I mixed up some araldite, applied to the brackets and used clothes pegs to clamp the dash in place.

picture.php

The screen was glued in place in the same way with some brackets, so that it can be removed if necessary, The end result looks like this.

picture.php

A view through the screen (screen decals have now been added too)

picture.php

Now it was time to tackle the paint work finish ... It's no good paying for all that paint and leave it all unfinished, otherwise it'll look crap, All the panels have now been Lacquered but after lacquering you'll be left with something like this :

picture.php

Under close scrutiny it has that horrible orange peel effect, Here's how I got rid of it.

The tank/seat unit was dragged into the kitchen sink and sanded down with 2500 grade wet and dry, (THE LACQUER HAS TO BE HARD WAIT AT LEAST TWO WEEKS BEFORE DOING THIS)
You'll notice some washing up liquid, this just lubricates the wet and dry. Dunno if this helps with the finish but it feels better :naughty:

picture.php

after a quick going over you'll see this : The low spots are still shiny

picture.php

So we keep going until that lacquer is "flat" (no low spots) Don't go mad with this you're only sanding the lacquer, we don't want to sand through it into the paint. This is what you'll be left with

picture.php

So now we have a nice flat finish it's time to polish it back up, I've used Meguires products, I'm sure there's other brands but used this because they have an excellent reputation. I don't have a polishing machine, So I have used a polishing mop that fits into an electric drill (a couple of quid from Halfords)

picture.php

First I have used a cutting compound, this will get rid of the sand paper marks.

picture.php

The mop has been rinsed out in cold water and used when wet (extra lube) Don't dwell in one area keep the mop moving.

picture.php

I rinsed out the mop again and repeated this process with the finishing polish. This is how that area ended up like, I've left the top of the tank "flat" for comparison

picture.php

The other panels have been done too, here's the top/ nose cone fairing all assembled and polished ready to fit onto the bike. Sander from Mod With Me has sent through the last of the decals and it finishes off the panels quite nicely. Top work from Sander, he's had to put up with a lot from me So a huge thanks man :thumb: I'm very happy.

picture.php

Ohh go on then another pic of that assembly

I have some really good news, EK Water Blocks are sponsoring me with a new block they have coming out. A big thanks to you guys.

I look forward to sharing with you what EK is about to release and the build will be complete by the end of the month.

I just love the idea of riding this into the LAN hall at Insomnia and setting it up, then being able to unplug it, ride it to your friends seat and plug it in over there. :p
