What used to be a UK
I have a couple of PC's with business critical software on them that need to exchange or access data between the two. We also want to backup their data in house so could anybody tell me if this would be a suitable server to buy? Also, would it be easy to connect this server to our current network, thank you:

WD 4TB (2 x 2TB) Sentinel DX4000 4-Bay Windows Server - Populated NAS

What's your current network? I'm going to assume Active Directory, in which case the WD should be fine.

In terms of critical, how critical are we talking? Most small NAS appliances are single controller with single port disks, so if you lose the controller you have to stop what you're doing until you can replace the unit.

Showing my ignorance here. just 5 stand-alone pc's and a couple of printers linked by a netgear router. Other pc's are linked by a power link supplying internet access and wifi in other rooms. The software will be installed on two machines whereby the data from one can be accessed and modified by the other.

Just a workgroup then.
If the company really does rely so much on this software then it should look at investing more into hardware/software that offers higher up times and a proper backup solution.
I suggest take the idea that that someone came and stole your NAS. What would you be left with? Could the company survive without this data?
You mentioned backup, where is the backup? Off-Site?

I'm not trying to be a dick just trying to tell you that if you have business critical software you need to treat it as such. I panic about my personal photos. I lost some a while back and since then I backup to lots of locations.

The backup would be both off and on site. We are part of a complex that provides its own security and people can't simply walk in as the doors are number key coded etc. I was just wondering whether the NAS mentioned would be suitable for our purposes as the software I'm talking about would require setting up all of this SQL and ODBC stuff to share and use the data anyway. It won't work without it or at least the way we want it too.

How about fire then? :)

SQL instances require a SQL Server running. Are you expecting this database to be running from the NAS?

LOL. I was hoping but looking at my comments I don't possess enough knowledge about these things. It is a requirement of the software we have bought to set up SQL and ODBC otherwise we just end up with two pieces ofvsoftware running independently of each other.

Your pretty much wanting a domain with a SQL server. I guess all this can be done using Microsoft Server Essentials and depending on the size of the database SQL Express.
This won't be anywhere near as cheap as buying a small NAS though.

I think my sister is thinking cheap so she would jump at the chance of the NAS I was pointing to albeit to get us started and if it would do the job. Perhaps I should have a word with OCUK support.

I'm not sure it's possible or advisable to run the SQL Server service on a domain contoller which Windows Server 2012 Essentials must be.
