So what's a "mini sim"? Is it just a normal sim?

Google brings up information about nanos, and micros which to be fair, I know about.

I'm after a budget sub £10 phone for my Mum, she's on Orange (who seem to be a pain to get ANY sim card size from in my experience), her sim card must be at least 10 years old, but it's the same size I was using before I swapped to a micro sim card.

I'm looking to get her a cheap Nokia 100/113/105 but it requires a "mini" sim. Is that standard big sim card in phones from old just a mini?

You can get a Micro sim cutter for a couple of quid on the bay and it will enable you to cut the standard sized sim to the correct size :)

A mini sim will be a normal standard sim.
Full-size (FF) credit card size
Mini-SIM (2FF) normal size
Micro-SIM (3FF) iphone 4 and most newer phones etc
Nano-SIM (4FF) iphone 5 etc

If the SIM card is at least 10 years old, then it will be a mini SIM card as that type of SIM card has been around since at least the late 1990's.
