Minimum hours if called into work.

If work phoned me up and asked me to come in there and then for 1 hour at my usual hourly wage then I'd tell them no. Just wouldn't be worth the petrol and effort.

Obviously an on-call contract it would be a different matter.

^^ Yeah does depends a bit on the nature of the job and how much pay - an hour at minimum wage is one thing, an on call fixed amount + decent hourly pay at an enhanced rate is a whole different story and same with job role if it was working in a garage or something one thing, a medical position, etc. another.

How about simply being a reasonable human being? How's that for a rule/law?

Are you really that desperate to cheap out?

Surely if you're calling someone in out of hours, then you're pulling the funds in from the customer anyway, so your company isn't really losing out?

Don't prey on peoples' desperation for pay... be at least some form of reasonable!

I used to do on-call duties for the company I work for at the moment... it wouldn't require going into the office, but could require calls and remote work at peculiar hours of the night/weekend.

We would get an extra £300/month for being on call 1 week in 6 (although it ended up 1 in 8 when a couple more wanted in on it)... then if we actually had to take a call or do anything, we would get minimum 4 hours at 1.5x rate during the week & 2x during weekends and bank holidays... I was ok with that. Didn't end up with that many calls anyway...

It certainly depends on the industry. In mine (investment management) overtime doesn't exist and if you are needed on a weekend you get nothing. I'm in the US on holiday at the moment and my work wanted me to do an interview by conference call this week. I only got out of it because the person accepted a job at another company.

I remember a previous company I was working at where I was told I was needed in the office for two 12+ hour days one weekend, despite the fact there was an important family event arranged. Having already worked an 80 hour week prior to the weekend I was disappointed to be told I would get 1 day in lieu thanks to working both Saturday and Sunday. Needless to say, I quit the company shortly after. The moral of the story is that you need to treat people with respect, especially when you are asking them to give up some of the little free time they have and maybe cancel plans.

Going back to the original question, I think remuneration should be above the standard rate and given that it is a weekend it should also include time taken for travel.

When I was oncall you got a retainer for being oncall (which worked out as being ~£256 a week before tax (and has since gone on up)) but were expected to work the first hour of any callout for free and then claim overtime for the rest of the callout at 1.5x or 2x depending on the day of the week.
