Minimum salary for IT Helpdesk support?

The Microsoft stuff was great; good bunch of people, six months of work then six months letting my ass grow big. Pay was average though.

Where you at now?

Agree there. If you gloss over the fact that it was Convergys and that it was a MS contract ears ***** up! Very new Service Pack etc etc and it was a very good laugh...
I'm working for a small IT firm at the mo. Only contracting, but its very good experience and decent money (£10p/h) :)

I've just interviewed a helpdesk chappy for 17k and he was happy to take the offer.

He'll be on 18k when he gets his first MS exam, and then if he's keen he'll be out there with car/phone/laptop 20k+ within a year.

Eh?

How could you be happy on 50k? 100k 200k?

That's a stupid question.

She has very good employers who pay her for hours she doesn't work and 80% of her income is free to go on living the life of luxury.

What next? People in Terrace houses can't be happy?

I was quite happy when I was a van driver many years ago on 13k. I got to see most of the uk and had a good time.

:/

EDIT: my mate earns around 14k, has his own house, lives on his own, enjoys numerous hobbies and is as happy as a pig in poo.

I see your point but in the grand scheme of things its not much if it wasnt offset by your own income.

Yes, you could live as your mate does, and survive, however I like holidays, nights out, cars, beer...:)

Just because he is on 14k a year doesn't mean he doesn't do the same things as you. To some people, money isn't everything.

As soon as they got far enough back in time that references wouldn't be asked for, I ceased mentioning the company and only the client.

Sorry but you have missed the point. My mate does more than survive. He goes on holiday, drinks beer, does all the stuff that you apparently need at least 30k to do...

If my wife lived on her own in the flat she used to rent she would still be well off enough to enjoy living (like my mate above).

Only owning property nowadays makes having a large salary a requirement. If me and the wife still lived in her flat we could drive round in Porcshes it is our house that costs.

Of course living down South is more expensive but you get paid more.

Money != Happiness

I know I have it and I am still miserable! :p :D

you guys think you got it bad... pfft, try the south west.

be lucky to get a first line support role for 10k, helpdesk roles are normally 12-15k...

last year i was on 10k (min. wage) commuting 2-3k miles a month... thats on one of the largest networks on the UK... one of three support guys supporting over 40k users :(...

not getting out of bed for 18k... pfft jog on

Depends on your outgoings and the lifestyle you and others around you lead. My average outgoings alone would require a salary of around £30k just to meet them, so no i wouldnt get out of bed for £18k full time as it would use up far too much of my time for the return.

South west outgoings are no doubt a lot lower, thus we now go full circle back to the original point that you cant put a figure on a job as it is area dependant.

True.

I just got a bit riled at people wanting tens of thousands with no experience or people saying you can't be happy unless you earn a fortune.

Im helpdesk support (mainly user support) and I started on about £11.5K 2 years ago. Im now on £15K ish. Thats up here in County Durham. Its not great but its a start and it means experience under the belt. (Even though its taught me I don't want to do IT.)

There's been an opening at my school recently in the nw, 14.5K a year for working as an ict assistant, term time, 8.15-2.30, hours negotiable, easy money they aren't even asking for qualifications or experience! :p

What's the minimum yearly salary I should expect to be on for an IT helpdesk support role?

Is £20,000 - £23,000 reasonable or is this too high?

Will be in Buckinghamshire if this makes any difference.

Cheers,

G

£0.38p an hour, or a bag of apples

Started on helpdesk @ 16k, that's average for the South East. Rose to 18k after a year. Would'nt go back to that though *shudder*

Depends on the role. I'd say minimum helpdesk salary is around £12k.

Obviously with your experience you should be able to get more than that, but you may struggle to find many places offering over £20k.

Is that actually £14.5k or £14.5k pro rata?
