Im looking at building a pc for day to day use, but would also like it to be able to play games to the same standards as the current consoles

would i be able to achieve this with say a pent g620 cpu and a hd 6670?

i am sure you can get away with a pretty "cheap" system that can match and no dought better the consoles. It will cost you more though unless you can pick up a deal from the bay.

Would you playing on a monitor / TV?

the graphics card in an Xbox 360 is basically an ATI X1800 (which is why playing any game on xbox now just makes me think I'm playing the Lego version)

any PC game on "minimum" settings will still look better than xbox and basically yes a 6670 is loads better than the graphics capability of an xbox, however a 6770 will quite a bit better for only about £10 more, or a 550ti for a fraction more than that

you would be needing a quad core CPU minimum
Why?! Most games don't really utilise multiple cores.

But I agree with that graphics card choice, though on a strict budget something cheaper might do.

What is your budget? We'll see what you can get for your money. Llano might be best.

Agreed, i have an i3 and it does the job perfectly for now.

Thanks for the advice so far, ive set a rough budget of £300 just to stop myself from going daft again plus i see it as a bang for buck challenge.

Im wanting to house it all in a lightweight mATX case as i will be carrying it between desk and tv depending on whether i wanna game on the big screen or not. Ive currently got a 17" lcd but would upgrade to a 21-24" once i build the pc. The monitor isn't included in the £300 budget

I know it sounds a little sad, but i created a spreadsheet with cost and passmark columns so i could work out the best cost / performance ratio's and surprisingly the celeron g530 topped the list. But im guessing this would be too weedy for gaming?

I like the idea of getting a socket 1155 m/board as this allows me to upgrade in the future all the way up the sandybridge line of processors as they come down in price.

Something like this perhaps:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Silverstone Sugo SG06B Mini ITX Case - Black (with 300 W PSU) £93.98
1 x Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD502HJ) £68.99
1 x Asus P8H61-I Intel H61 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £64.99
1 x Intel Pentium G620 2.60GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £47.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9D3X2K2/4GX) £17.99
Total : £305.94 (includes shipping : £10.00).

Do you have an OS you can use? This is without any graphics card too!
Also, I must confess I know very little about this motherboard except that it has USB3.

I used to have this case and really like it, but it is expensive and OCUK don't have many miniITX cases. A starting point anyway.

I'd probably get this CPU as a minimum

Console games are extremely optimized and run around medium to medium/high but on low resultions and most of the time no AA.

To get similiar or slightly better performance to 2011 releases this is what your going to need if buying from ocuk:
