minimum via mini-itx required to play divx and dvd?

Awesome info - I think I'm just going to build two systems. One lower power SD divx capable system for in car use and another more powerful HD one for in home use.

Thanks again for the info.

FYI I have a VIA EN12000E.
It can cope fine with playing back DVD's and mpeg2's dumped from freeview
at SD (720x576)

Most divx files play fine at SD (720x576), although it does stutter a bit on some,
the mpeg4 decode is a bit more demanding than mpeg2.

Anything above SD is a no-no however.

I am using it through TV out to a regular TV so it's fine for now.

Ohhh that's the fanless one right? That's intriguing. I'm figuring in a harsh environment like a car the less moving parts the better (i.e. fan).

If it helps any I've just picked up an LN10000EG and have just ordered the rest of the bits to build a mini-pc. It's primarily for internet for my 7-year old but I'll also have a go playing DVDs etc and post back up.

Mr B - once it's built can you provide some feedback on its dvd capabilities? Also could you play a divx on it and let me know how that goes mate? I'd really appreciate it.

I had the via epia m1000 1ghz cpu for a small media center, and this played almost everything i threw at it, every now and then, a dvd would start to stutter, but i'm talking like 2 dvd's out of hundreds that were tried.

CPU usage would be around 90% most of the time when playing a dvd/divx file though.

If you want to run windows update on it though, do it over night, it takes aaaaaages!

Hehe - the windows update comment made me laugh :) I think i'll play it safe and go for the 1.5 atom boards.. Cheers.

Oh come on, thats a ridiculous comment. I am talking about in a home cinema environment.

sorry - was being tongue in cheek - but if you read my other posts you will see that the application is for a low power consuming media machine to play divx's in my car as well as dvd's. :)

Sorry though mate - i was just being cheeky :) No offence meant :)

Yup - You are absolutely right. Much better off making a HD one because I suppose then on the odd occasion (like when visitng friends) I can take it out of the car and connect it to a TV. I just need to be careful when designing it to allow it to be powered by in car power supply as well as 240v AC.

No problem. I just finished building it yesterday but Windows 7 was the only OS I had to put on it - hopefully I should be able to test it's abilities later this afternoon and from what I've read Divx support should be inbuilt.

OK, with standard VIA drivers, DVD and Divx playback are pants. Very stuttery, so much so as to make it unwatchable. I'm going to try updating the drivers and see what happens.

*no joy. Tried with Vista HP too and the same - only this time I get an error message which states that the 64mb of video RAM is not enough. Going to try XP next...

OK, hope you're still interested :) Anyway, it's all up and running on XP Home SP3, with the latest drivers and I must say it's all working pretty much perfectly. It's hooked to a 24" Toshiba LCD TV via the VGA cable and resolution is set to 1280x1024 (I think). DVD playback is very good although it does struggle a bit with the blacks - a bit of pixelation in very dark scenes. This doesn't bother me too much as it's only for the kids and there is already a DVD player hooked up to the same telly.

I haven't tried divx yet. Perhaps tomorrow.:)

I would be interested to see a linux OS with XFCE desktop/fluxbox on there plllleeeaaasssseeee.

Common Mr Brown, ditch Micro$haft. It will run better then!! :)

Definitely still interested! So - with default drivers its rubbish but with just a driver upgrade it is working smoothly? That's awesome! Let us know how the divx works out.
