Minisforum N5 Pro NAS

Pretty much par for the course with Minisforum (and they aren't unique in doing it) - everything is on permanent discount with the name of the discount changed around a bit. The 32GB UM790 Pro for example has been "on sale" with £144 "off" pretty much ever since release.

Ah the DFS mentality.

I'm getting the impression it won't be the first week of June.........

Edit - if you're interested in Minisforum as a company.

Really not sure how I feel about Rob. 90% of his website is written by ChatGPT or another AI tool. I mean, at least go to the effort to write your own actual articles. No wonder his videos come across as they do. With that said, there really isn't much out there in terms of NAS content, and hats off to him, he seems to be doing well.

A Reddit Minisforum account claims pre-sale next week....

I got a Aoostar WTR Max coming in a few weeks :)

Minisforum has said the N5 Pro will be out for pre order the end of june.
I think the price is going to be about $1,000+

I had one on pre-order as well but I cancelled it in favour of N5 Pro, not in a massive rush but I’d deffo be interested in your thoughts on WTR Max

I wasn't so sure about the Aoostar and didn't realise it had 10Gb. Plus the APU is still decent for light gaming and it's between £500-650. Tempting.

I'm also very tempted, despite my usual reservation about Chinese companies. I do wonder what corners have been cut to get it at that price point, and what support would be like in case of HW failure. Having to ship a NAS to China and potentially having to wait multiple weeks for a response, plus not knowing how they'd deal with it is something worth thinking about. It might be amazing as a product, but it's a gamble IMO and not many people have the spare cash to have a cold spare sat in storage.

In my case, my DS1821+ is far from perfect, but it works, and it works well. The money spent on a replacement would go a decent way to larger (or more) capacity drives.

Personally very wary of noname brand devices like this - I've seen a lot where support is hit and miss and even if free of malware it isn't unusual for some dodgy behaviour or potential security vulnerabilities which is probably leaving a backdoor open that could be accessed later - one I've seen a bit for example is a dubious NTP client which regularly contacts an unknown server for time synchronisation but has vulnerabilities which potentially indicate it could be used to compromise the device via commands masquerading as time updates.

Could a more tweaked and hands on install of the OS not mitigate against this? Or are these vulnerabilities at a firmware level?
