Missing earlier years

Freelance is a bit of a tricky one really, I work in advertising and done the freelance thing for a couple of years, they've basically got you by the proverbials, if you don't hang around after hours they simply won't get you back in. I found I was working longer and having less holidays as there'd be the constant implied threat of no future work if I didn't. It wasn't for me.

I decided that also, I’m only in my mid-30’s and been at the same company for almost 15 years, higher ups get arsey with me not working outside my hours.
Apparently I’m not a “team player” because I don’t do overtime or put in an extra hour after work with little notice.

Almost identical situation as me, apart from I will stay if it's paid overtime but I am often expected to stay for free and it is always mentioned when I don't. I stopped doing the whole staying for free about 9 years ago (been with the company 19 years this year). I live 6 miles from work so I am normally home at 3:40pm every day.

Simple way of fixing that issue, take your skill set elsewhere.

I used to love just chilling with a book and enjoying a bit of escapism.

My attention span just seems to have gone out the window these days though, too many distractions and my brain is always going at a hundred miles per hour worrying about work or othe random crap :(

I think the pace of life feels a lot more manic now. I ditched my smartphone to help a bit but it's hard to just disconnect and unwind.

At one point during the early 90s my Manager bought my contract to me that I'd signed in 1980 saying I would do overtime if needed, I had to agree to do 1 hour over for a week :)
I did become a Manager and for about 2 years I had to go in on a Saturday morning for 4 hours once a month which was easy peasy and I was still home to watch football at dinnertime and go down the Stoke match.
In the last 12 years at the NHS it is 8:30 to 5pm, no overtime.
Forgot to mention that I also planned my life around 4 days a week.
