Hi Guys,

Bit of a favour/advice please... a friend has filled their car up with oil in the morning but in the process left the oil cap somewhere and driven around all day, to return with oil spilling over the engine etc.

Two questions :

1. Can you drive without an oil cap (i'm assuming not because of the potential to spill out onto the engine during operation again).

2. Any home-made temporary alternatives?

Thanks.

1 - no

2 - you could do something like tape over it with alu foil (or any heat resistant duct tape)and a bit of thin metal - but it would be just as easy to buy a new cap

I bet his engine bay is a mess. I once started my engine after an oil change and soon realised I hadn't put the cap on. It took me ages to clean it up.

Depending on the car, I'd personally go to the nearest scrap car dealer, ask if he has that model in stock and get the price for the oil cap.

Shouldn't cost more than a fiver. (Certainly going from me having to buy one a couple of years back).

Thanks for the responses ! Especially the sock forum post, thankfully wasn't quite that situation !!!

It looks as though the only mess was on the underside of the hood.

Needless to say they won't be driving the car until the cap is replaced !!

Best move really, Not only will oil go everywhere but contaminants could find their way in too.

Oil all over the engine bay is probably a big fire hazard as well. Stick some duct tape or something over it temporarily :D
