My PC sees that it has 4Gb of ram, from right clicking 'Computer' and it shows the specs. But in the Task Manager, its only showing 3Gb of physical memory?

Am I doing something wrong?

Never saw that before, especially since it says its a 64 bit OS.

i was gonna say that its using the rest for cached but that wouldnt add up.

I don't think even those crap GPU's from both Vendors that use System ram when needed take 1GB.

Hmm You got a Memory Remap Option in your Bios ?.

Its an X1950 with its own ram, so thats not it.

I'll try rebooting and looking for memory remap. Should it be on or off?

Erm, I think I've found it, thanks to the windows experience thread.

Apparently it is the graphics card, its only 512Mb, but it says it has 1.7Gb? Thats far too much for a graphics card, but how do I get it back?

Turn memory remap on in your BIOS.

Some of that graphics memory is virtual or shared, I have that too.

Edit: infact I have 2289MB..

Ah, thats done the job nicely.

Does that mean I've spent the last 10 months thinking I had 4Gb of ram, but only using 3? T_T

Lucky I remembered that option in Bios as I don't have/need it. ;)

No, only since SP1 has Vista reported 4GB for 32bit Vista, before it would have said 3GB-3.50GB for most users.

I had 3.25GB on XP 32bit due to GPU having 768MB of Memory and possibly 64MB of Soundcard Memory (not sure if it gets counted some peeps even claim 2MB of your Optical Drives get counted but I seriously doubt it as its a Cache same as HDD has).

Everything that needs address space gets it, then whatever is left is RAM. Imagine having 2 4870X2s on a 32bit OS.. 4GB of Video memory :) Would you have any RAM?

burns

what ram is it? what motherboard is it?

might need to up the voltage of the NB/MCH and ram (or bios update)

This is an ongoing issue, I think I've mentioned it before.

It's an Asus A8N-Sli Deluxe with Corsair value select DDR1 (not too fussed with speed, but with lots of VMs open I need the space)

Tried upping the voltage and a BIOS update to no avail.

check your motherboard manual, many DDR1 boards are pretty fussy about having all slots used..

might be time to upgrade mate

I've not really got the money or inclination for an upgrade. The performance is more than enough for what I do on a day to day basis (web, office and dev work).

I'll try filling the slots and see what happens.
