My younger brother (who's in year 11) has a different name in school compared to his birth certificate. His middle name is spelt O'Brien on the certificate and O'brian just about everywhere else. I don't think its my dad who made the mistake and must have happened somewhere down the line at his primary.

This is a huge concern as he is currently sitting his GCSE's and we have been sent a letter from school to double check all names e.t.c.

What has got to be done? He's grown up with O'brian as his middle name and would like it kept that way. Does he change his name via the official channels or just change it at school and everywhere else as this would be quite a feat. He's also gotten used to it.

Much appreciated,

Jay

Very simple, just has to say the following words:

"Actually sir/miss, the name for my exams is wrong. I need it changed."

Are you as a family actually entertaining the idea of changing his middle name to accommodate a spelling mistake at school?

The problem is that he has a load of certificates/trophies/awards e.t.c.
He's also picked up a few Btec Certificates with the name on
Oh just noticed the work experience cert.

^^^ none of those are as important as his GCSE's which then follows onto A-Levels then Degree certificate.

Where do you stop?

wait, so back when he started school someone misspelt his name and you've all been going along with it till he was 16?

and only now are you thinking "hmm maybe we should have corrected them"?

I've been known as Andy my entire life but my first name is actually Charles.
Hasn't made the slightest iota of difference.
Even my signature starts with an A.

I'd still tell them to fix the mistake then if anyone ever questions the middle name on previous certificates tell them it was a spelling mistake.

Sounds like it's easiest to change his name on the birth certificate if he wants to keep the "a".

I was christened name1 name2 surname but at when I was young decided I preferred name2.

My birth certificate, NI number, passport have "name1 name2 surname"
My driving licence, bank accounts, school records, medical records and everything else is "name2 name1 surname" (or name1 omitted).

Can't say I've ever had any problems even when getting a US work visa.

Could be more of an issue for him due to the misspelling.

Anyone use any name they want as long as it isn't for the purposes of fraud, just by saying so. In this case, he might need approval from whoever has parental responsibility for him. I don't know what the cut-off point is for age (or how old he is).

So the easiest thing to do is to keep his name as O'Brien on the birth certificate (which I'm not sure you can get changed at all) and state that his name is O'brian. There's no intent to defraud with the name change, so it's fine.

If you want to sort things out in an official manner, just get evidence of a change of name. A deed poll does that. It isn't necessary to get evidence for a change of name, but it makes paperwork easier.

Ah, this page has info. CAB's page on changing names:

Middle name on exams? Ignore it, I rarely bother to write mine in, his candidate number will identify him anyway, the name is only on there just in case the candidate is so thick they fail to write their candidate number correctly.

Also, O'Brien as a middle name? Not heard that one before. I'm quite interested to find out your surname TBH - hoping it's O' something else, or Mc something... :D

i got the same, DamiAn on the birth certificate and i use Damien,

i got credit cards drivers lisence an all in my name Damien :))
What does your passport say? I was wondering about airline tickets.

Might airlines like Ryanair refuse to let you check in unless you shell out £££ to correct a difference.

My first name 'Eliot' always gets spelt wrong. V5's/Certificates etc. Even people that have it on the screen in front of them can't even bloody spell it. It's not Elliot, Elliott or Eliott, or even Elllliotttttt.

Such a pain in the arse.
