Well, I got a 2nd offer on a Mitsubishi Carisma. I Have 22 hours to decide if I want it (ebay).
Its a 1999 MITSUBISHI CARISMA SE GDI BLUE. In full working condition. New cambelt at 50k, new tyres and battery this year as well as a new A/c Condenser. Only on 59k miles.

The seller hasn't emailed me back yet about why the winner didn't complete. Still waiting for that before I do anything. But for £800 sounds like a bargain. what do you guys think?

£800!

My dad has a 53 plate DID. He puts 30,000 miles on it per year. It's good on the fuel. Never had anything go wrong with it and it's barely been serviced.

However, the interior is dreadful, and the "leather" seats are really uncomfortable.

But for £800 you can't really go wrong!

Probably one of the most boring cars in the word but as a workhorse for that sort of money it seems to be a good deal. AFAIK the Carisma and the Volvo S40 are almost identical so probably comparable performance wise. I hear they are ultra reliable too.

Just watch you don't fall asleep at the wheel :p

0-60 9.7.
But most of my miles is stuck in traffic on Gloucester road in Bristol.

Reasson winner turned it down. Is the reserve price was £1000 and we didn't reach that. He offered it to the winner. But he didn't reply within the 24hr period. So it's now my turn.

Awful colour, awful interior and I would look into the accident damage a bit closer. But other than that it should provide you with quite a few miles of hassle free motoring.
It depends what you're after. If you want a cheap workhorse to get you to work and back and you need one sharpish then it seems like a good buy.

Pretty much summed up what I think of it. i need something that does 12miles a day commuting and 32 miles once every other week on the motorway.

I hate big decisions.

The stupid thing is when it came to buy a rust bucket i had no problem handing out the money because I love the car. But for a workhorse it's a bit different.

Well I reckon if you buy it and don't like it you could easily sell it for more than you pay for it. Those 'low miles' will have the punters throwing money at you!

Go for it!

I'll be able to spot you on Gloucester Road a mile off now! Where abouts do you work? I come down from WSM, then come off @ J16 of the M5 and come down the A38... to City of Bristol College. Small world.

Absolutely nothing wrong with them, mitsubishi reliability, good engine that pulls quite well at high revs, if it's all in order then that's a bargain, people say they're boring to drive, no more than a mondeo, vectra and the other usual cars in it's class from my experience.

It'll go on for ages if it's not been neglected.

Can do more than you would think with them in terms of modding etc, people have dropped evo running gears in them.

/Anorak mode on

Actually Carisma and Volvo S40/V40 shared only two engines for relatively short period of time(Volvo borrowed Mitis's 1.8 GDI for their first 40 series, and Mitsi borrowed Volvo sourced Renault's 1.9TD for few months before they developed their own DI-D). Except that they shared basic platform with chasis and some suspension components in selected base models.

All together, before Volvo facelift only 1/5th of all components were common between S/V40 and Carisma, out of which 640 were made by Volvo and 352 by Mitsubishi, mainly the cheap interior.

Ironically it was Volvo's cost cutting politics at NedCar that affected Carisma's/Lancer suspension and handling (originally designed around stiffer KYB setup) but it was Volvo sales that suffered the most from press getting completely obsessed and describing S40 as "mundane Carisma" for twice the price. None of which is true to anyone who actually drove mid production 90ies Carisma and S40.

Well picked it up tonight, drove down after work. It doesn't look so ugly or as bright in real life, although it was dark. The interior is very nice, nicely laid out dash. But OMG what have they covered the seats in. The rest of the cabin is nicely finished of, It's just the seat covers that give it a tacky cheap look.

Couldn't see anything wrong with it and dad drove it back (doc insurance) and didn't find any niggling problems on it. So, so far so good.

:)

I go from Cotham brow (the arches) up to Filton avenue and across to parkway station. Just look for the bright blue with a fat git driving it. Either puttling along letting people out. or more likely revving the engine and diving in and out. Although haven't got insurance yet.

My mum bought a 1997 Carisma 1.8 auto in 2000 with 63k on the clock, I got it in 2003 with 85k on the clock, and sold it in 2005 with 102k on the clock.

We never had a *single* thing go wrong with it. Granted it wasn't the prettiest car, or the best handling car, or the most "exciting" car, but it was a darn good car nevertheless!

That is the one car in nearly 30 years of driving that my mum wishes she'd never sold!
