Mixed sex!

Good, I would have rather had a civil partnership than a marriage to my wife, but there you go.
Out of curiousity, why? I’m intrigued. I just had this conversation with my girlfriend and we both wholly preferred the term ‘marriage’, probably due to its longstanding use and obvious connotations.

It's probbaly due its longstanding use and obvious connotations :p

Ha :p

When I think of marriage I think of ‘togetherness, formally becoming a unit, love, long lasting relationship, commitment, non-esssential precursor to children’. I suppose it had religious connotations too, but I don’t think that’s a ‘thing’ and just because you’re married doesn’t mean your religious.

Would we consider marriage? No
Would we consider a Civil Partnership? Yes

Neither of us are religious nor the connotations (thanks Tefal for giving my morning brain the word I was looking for).

Will we get one? Probably at some point.

Because I always disliked the religious association of marriage. In the end, our ceremony didn't feel even remotely religious so I feel fine about it.

On a separate topic - I do think that now all people have easy access to both marriage (whether via religious or civil ceremonies) and civil partnerships (which certainly don't have any traditional expectations of an expensive ceremony etc..) then couples who live together and don't opt into getting a marriage or civil partnership shouldn't then have claims on each others assets - some personal responsibility needs to be taken and an opt in made. (This otherwise poses a financial risk to say people in their 20s and 30s who might allow a girlfriend/boyfriend to move into their property etc.. but with whom they've not necessarily made that sort of commitment)

Yeah ostensibly there isn't much difference but small things/associations do matter to people... I guess the civil partnerships were created as a fudge because some (often religious) people had an issue with marriage being associated with same sex couples that religious link for marriage works both ways (there are also feminists who don't like what they see as the historic misogynistic side of marriage either). It seems almost foreseeable that a fudge to create something that is explicitly "not marriage" in order to satisfy conservative religious people at the time would in turn be attractive to others for the same reason.

Why doesn't everyone just opt for common law marriage, and just completely bypass the government? Then no one will ever have to fight for rights for any type of marriage.
You all must know that a legal marriage/register is just another way to make money from the public.

I don’t think I have ever heard of ‘mixed sex’ other than in relation to a group of people, or a couple, featuring willies AND vaginas.
I suppose I could go to a bar and then say I mixed sex on the beach with some wine.

If I was describing a gay partnership or wedding I would call it gay. If I was describing the nature of a straight partnership I would call it heterosexual or straight. I fully accept that states of civil partnership or marriage are officially called same sex and mixed sex.
Drinks - you have heard of the phrase 'gay sex' haven't you? Gay or straight sex on the beach. It's not usually required to state your preference when ordering that drink.

Inheritance/tax purposes?

I hear this all the time, but what are you on about?

Marriage has existed all over the globe in all cultures for eons. Even from a Christian perspective which I guess is your gripe, marriage predates the church or Christ by a long stretch.

I think this civil partnership law is fairly ridiculous myself. Existing marriage laws (for gay or straight) were so flexible you could add or remove anything you wanted. There is no requirement for anything religious (my marriage had no religious connotations). However there is no way we would have taken a civil partnership. To me this just seems like a push from the hard left to try and break down another institution that our society is based on.

My wife is my wife, not a business partner.

Replace "same sex" with homosex
Nah, homosex is what you get in prison!

I know homosex isn't a word. If you're referring to a couple you need to suffix it with "ual".
As in, "You two from Cell Block H - You gimme all yer Aprils, or I'll homosex ual"? :D

Not "homosex couple" lol of course that's not correct.
It's as correct as you want it to be. Far more ridiculous and useless words have made it into the dictionary...

Apparently there is such a thing as 'homeosexual' too, which could mean either 'similar' (sex with a Dude who looks like a lady), state of equilibrium (which means you **** as much as you fight), or is just some wittery half-invented form of 'alternative' sex designed to be "complimentary" to proper sex but has no real evidence to support it....!

I'd look at it from the opposite direction - Civil Partnership sounds like something a government department does when creating a joint business venture with private company contractors!
"DEFRA and the Rural Payments Agency have today announced a civil partnership with Farmer's Fields Ltd, that will expedite the processing of strawberry and carrot crops in today's growing market climate"
