I've recently obtained a CPU/mobo combo and it came with a single 4GB stick. Clearly this won't run in dual channel so i'm wondering if I can add a 2GB stick as I have one lying around. Would this cause system instability or effect the systems performance in a negative way?

i wouldnt say so as you expanding your memory i am currently running 2x4gb and 2x2gb and it is stable
You would get away with it, but you would be asking your system to do something it doesn't have to do...
I would sell the 2gb stick you got and buy an identical 4gb stick... it would work better than the option you have, also trying to overclock a 4gb stick and different 2gb stick would be a bitch!
