I know its meant to be bad practice, but i need to change two rear tyres and I don't fancy paying 600 quid for 2 runflats. Can I just put some avons on the back while keeping the dunlops on the front?

Why not just switch to normal tyres all round?

Also get some good branded ones on the rear.

Why not? What makes it any different to running any other 2 different types of tyre on the front and rear? Genuine question, I can't think of a good reason.

There is that, but do non runflats last longer? I know its supposed to be a more comfortable ride with non run flats, but what are the better tyres to fit? I have a funny size (18s) with 275 at the back and 245 at the front.
 
Plus runflats can't have a puncture repaired IIRC, making them potentially more expensive should you get a (slow) puncture in the future.. is there really a positive reason for runflats over non-runflats, apart from not needing to carry a spare wheel/change one at the side of the road?

I mean do rft tyres last longer because they are made of harder material? Genuinely interested.

Also, which tyre supplier? Currently, Kwik Fit have the SP01 run flats for £351 for both online, as loathe as I am to go there lol.

They can as long as its on the main tyre tread and not on the sidewall. They should also not have driven far and so the structure of the tyre isnt compromised. Not all places will repair them but a lot will these days.

i think runflats last longer, we just changed ours on the 5 a few months ago after 3.5 years and 30,000 miles.
but then it only really ever does motorway miles

When comparing the runflat and non runflat variant of the same tyre I see no reason why they would last longer. 5's came out of the factory on touring tyres not sports tyres so even before runflats you'd get pretty good mileage out of them.
