My Focus has terrible radio reception, especially if it's raining or it has been wet. I was going to do a resistance test from the stub on the roof to the back of the headunit but I don't know what sort of result I should be expecting. I can't seem to find too many results on google so I was wondering if someone had the same sort of issue? I was going to buy a new aerial but I don't want to spend any more money on the car than I need to.

So the new aerial didn't fix this. I think it's made it better, but not much. If I get time this weekend I will do a resistance test from the cable at the back of the headunit to the stub on the roof.

The aerial earths through the base (or there is a short earth wire attached to the chassis) or it earths through the head unit. To check them, set the meter to DC volts and put the positive probe on the battery + post and use the negative probe to check the earths for voltage loss (radio needs to be on and tuned in), you should have less than 0.3v DC.

It would be worth checking for excess alternator ripple to rule that out - use a multimeter set to A/C volts, positive probe goes on the battery + post, negative probe on the alternator B+ post. The reading should be less than 0.5v A/C. Turn the lights on and hold revs off idle to about 2,500 rpm to be 100% certain as idle speed results can be lower due to less charge being produced on some alternators.
