Was starting to get my car ready for it's upcoming trip to the bodyshop yesterday, part of which involved removing the carpets to expose the full extent of the footwell rot:

Drivers Side Sill (You're really not meant to be able to see the inside of it!):

Drivers Side Footwell (I think the rot is due to a lack of proper rustproofing when new inner wings have been fitted in the past):

Passengers Side Footwell(Thankfully not as bad as the drivers side):

At least the arches are OK :p

ohh rust...

I'd be interested how much it costs you once it's done.

Also do you have any drain plugs in the sills?
If you have get some waxol, you thin it down with white spirit. Then get hand pump sprayer and a delivery rod. And fire some in your sills. It penetrates rust, will last for ever.

Great stuff.

Been quoted £1500 for basically a restoration of the lower 6" or so of the shell plus a full respray afterwards although the guy who is doing it hasn't actually seen the car yet so I'm holding a bit in reserve in case the price goes up. (I'd like to be spending the extra on wheels but I'm holding off for now)

There's access to the inside of the sills from above so I probably will waxoyl it all once I get it back (assuming the bodywork guy doesn't do it anyway)

OOh, just the fun I've got coming, though my arches are nasty nasty, need replacements. On the plus side it has just managed 7 trips around the ring and the drives there and back!!!

Excellent - got any pics? (Of the Ring trip, not the rust - I've seen plenty of rusty arches ;))

Presume you're getting the arch kit from the company near Scarborough/Malton? It's on fleabay for £210 at the moment for all 6 bits. Where are you located btw, I know a VERY good place around Hartlepool that will be much cheaper than that, though the old guy will hold you hostage and ramble at you for 2 or 3 hours before giving you a price.

On a Mk1 MR2 that quite a bit to spend.

You could buy another for that money. Can you back up your outgoings with insurance that covers the car for more than you've spent on it?

J

The guy that does the work does it for that price in order to keep the Mk1 MR2 on the road. It's perfectly feasible to buy another car for that money but when you already own one, and know how it runs etc, it is just as easy to spend the money on getting it fixed up, than waste your time looking for another one in better or the same condition or better as the one you already have. As far as insurance goes - it's peanuts anyway :) Oh the joys of being old! (However being female, my insurance is higher than his :()

So basically, in answer to your question, yes :)

Kitchster, that's a nice pic! I like the cross-over cars (late C early D)- like mine!!

Cheers Vix, nice to see other Mk1 nuts!!!:D

Mine is coming off the road for a complete overhaul - bodywork is top priority, then brakes (uprated) shocks and hopefully engine/box/ECU transplant. Thinking of a Mk2 Phase 3 2.0 in there, nothing to silly like a turbo as 170bhp in a Mk1 will be lairy enough I think. Wondering about going to 15's as well, the thought process being see if I can fit S13 200SX teardrops to make it look as authentic as possible - I like sleepers :D

I spent today de-pinking mine! Looks so much better now!

Same story with my dads old 155.

Until a friend backed into the passenger door.

He paid for the door and wing to be painted quite willingly. He doesn't know that he also paid for the centre of the bumpers to be painted too.

All the painted panels stayed red, they had a coat of clear on top.

The work is being done by Paul Woods (general mk1 guru), does involve a fair old drive plus I've been waiting for it to go in since the end of May but I know he'll do a good job and will do what's right for the car rather than trying to make a quick buck. If it needs any arch panels I assume they'll be coming from that place though.

Whilst the whole thing may not be particularly cost effective compared tot he value of the car I don't care. I've never had a car that I've cared for enough to recklessly throw money at before and once it's done It should last for a good while yet. Besides the cost of buying this car plus doing the bodywork is still less than a lot of people on here lose in depreciation over a couple of years.

Couldn't agree more mate, am going top start my project thread later today/tomorrow as I've been a busy boy, though I fear the shots from under my carpet may upset you - the only proper red parts on it!!!!

Nah we are used to the lovely colours the red paint goes - having two 'red' ones already :)
