MK2 Octavia VRS

Slightly late to discussion - but I thought I would chip in to the price issue from the top of the thread.

There is a large batch of mk2 vRS's on the market imported by some cheapskate dealer from Ireland or Cyprus that don't meet UK spec. You will easily spot them in classifieds as they all have "washing machine knob" style manual air con instead of digital dual zone climate control all UK vRS's were equipped with. Some of them are also missing other options - such as, depending on year, full maxidot, tyre pressure sensors etc. Because of that they often fetch prices below the book and constantly change hands because the owners very quickly get annoyed with missing features everyone else has.

The dual-zone AC was only standard from 2007.
Full maxidot has never been standard on the vRS - I lie, Mk2.5 has it as standard.
TPS - only the basic sensors are standard, the one that actually tells you each tyre pressure is an upgrade.

I'm perfectly capable of managing my own finances, thanks.

I understand. I'm just saying it's a massive financial commitment and most people don't truly appreciate the cost of owning a house. After paying £4k deposit, I then went on to spend an additional £3-4k on furniture, carpets, garden etc.

I've lived on my own/with partner for the last six years, I know what things cost, I also have all the furniture I need.

Believe me when I say that I know what I'm doing.

Just read through the 3 pages of this thread and I am blown away by people attitudes towards Mike's decision.

As someone who is in a very similar situation to Mike I can safely say, I would love to be in a position where selling my car would free up some 'equity', however most I could get would be around £800!

Me and my girlfriend are looking to purchase in November/December time, however there is a house just come up for sale that is our 'dream' house, at an unbelievable price (reposession). We need 8k to get it (to make up the 10% deposit required), if I had a car I could sell to get this...without a blink of an eye I would...not that I cannot afford to run it....not like I don't like it...it is just because I can free up the money to get the house...and then afford to buy another car with similar performance.

End of the day wouldnt be motors without something like this being debated! However as it is motors should be kept on the right subject, otherwise it would have been started up in General Discussion.

If you do want to look at £5k motors then I'd be weighing up between:

a 2004ish rx8 - if you can stomach the mpgz
a mk1 vrs
or an st220 if the vrs looks too dated for you.

St170 would be too old a design IMO
330 sport would be old, high mileage and shagged. Maybe an se could be found in decent nick.

I hadn't really considered the RX8, I wonder how practical it would be with a baby seat in the rear. Fuel economy and Tax would be a bit of a concern, but I guess these costs are almost offset by the low purchase price.

It's got isofix and the half door things at the back offer decent access. It jus depends if your car seat will fit behind your passenger. Ours is quite a bulky one and is a bit of a squeeze even in the leon. What sort of consumption figures are you getting at the moment?

19MPG.

I've just been offered a loan of an RX8 for as long as I like up until he sells it in a few weeks time. I'll take him up on the offer for a weekend and see how I get on.

How you could possibly come to that conclusion without knowing what I've done to my car or what fuel I use, I don't know.

Well I doubt you've added two new turbochargers and a nitrous system, and I suspect you are using 95-99 RON unleaded fuel, and you drive a Focus ST. I mean what a stupid post, 'You dont know what fuel I use!'

Gosh, you hardly use diesel in it, do you!

Therefore it isn't particularly outrageous to assume you have a usage profile that isn't going to yield the higher end of acheivable economy from a 3 litre diesel.

Well the difference between T99 and the local Texaco SUL is about 5MPG. Without the remap, that figure would probably be a few MPG higher, too.

The figure I gave is on T99.

i'm not going to get into an argument over whether changing fuel gives you a 25% fuel economy increase because we'll be here all day and it wont really serve the interests of the thread.

I drive a 530i in such a way as to return 19mpg and if I drive the 530d in the same way, it returns 27mpg.

There is no argument to be had, I achieve the same results over and over and over again.

I'm not the only one who achieves lower fuel economy with T99, but unfortunately, its my only choice sometimes.

My point is, If I was using another fuel, I'd be achieving the upper end of 23MPG, which appears to be about average, for average driving in an ST according to a thread on that very matter over on FSTOC.

So with that in mind, that 19MPG doesn't say much about my "usage profile".
