as title really, I've been putting my baby in the back but he drops his dummy at the most inconvenient times, so i'd like to put him in front if i can turn the airbag off.

The Mk3 works on pressure sensors in the seats to determine what is on the seat. The generation2 system can supposedly detect a child seat due to the way in which the seat distributes weight.
There are 2 generations of the system in the Mk3 though. The first generation cannot detect seats very well.
Would I trust either system to be faultless when it came down to my childs life? No chance.
Ford may be able to deactivate or remove the airbag but I am unsure on this.
I would keep the child in the back of the car. If he/she drops something then it will distract your attention from the road whilst you picked it up. This could result in the airbags going off... to put it nicely.
