MK4 Golf GT TDi, do you HAVE to take rear wheels off to replace coilsprings?

God knows then, something must have been up with them for 2 garages to fail them, nevermind, they replaced now, not going to put the old ones back on,lol.

you dont need spring compressors, all you do is raise the rear of the vehicle, remove the bottom bolt of the strut, this should allow you to pull the axel down abit so you can remove the old spring, then slide your new one in. its an easy job, you dont need to remove the wheels, but bearing that in mind i do mine on a two poster ramp at work.

easy peasy

Great advice!

Thanks to you guys I successfully changed my coil springs last night on my old Audi A3.

On my first attempt I didn't undo the shocks and went at it with some spring compressors, shortly after compressing the spring by 1/3 I started to consider the physics involved... potential energy formulas started running through my head and I decided it was too risky...

The haynes manual gave both options, drop the shocks or spring compressors with a bold warning message about undertaking the task without spring compressors.

I did use them (just until finger tight) to get the springs back in as I didn't raise the car high enough on my axle stands to get the new ones back in (I'm over cautious when jacking the car too).

Anyway to those out there tempted to do it, the words in this post are extremely helpful and make the job a very safe and rewarding challenge.

Thanks again to those who took the time to write about their experiences on the forum!

Tristan.
