Mk4 Golf GTI - why so slow?

the leon cupra(new one) has been slated for being a bit oo hard suspension wise.i followed one up thew a1 the other week, pretty nippy cars and great value, you get a lot of cars for the money.

sorry but mk4 golfs are pants, too soft,no steering feel and too heavy.my sister had a 1.8t and it wasnt any quicker as the renault 19 16v i had at the time and the r19 would eat it alive round corners.the mk5 gti is a whole lot better

Hmmm........the turbo diesel version seems pretty good, and it looks like you can get quite a bit of power out of it too. Just been watching some youtube vids of them and they seem pretty swift for an oil burner (and the economy is damn good too)

My cousin has a 1.8 24v GTI Mark 4, is this a turbo? (not sure on the amount of valves also)

Not clued up on Golfs.

Get a Mk2 & sort it out yourself, Superb cars then & now. I miss my 2dr Aqua blue 16 valver. The new ones shouldn't even be called Golf GTI's it's just wrong.

its not 24v, but if its 1.8 and has a red I on the GTI badge, it has a turbo.

The red i doesn't indicate it has a turbo, no one really knows why but some cars came with it some didn't. Mine didn't but it still has a turbo.

Can understand the mk4 being regarded as unGTIlike, but the mk5 is rated as a true GTI. If you're looking at the mk4 golf though, you're probably better off getting a leon or octavia.

as an xmas present to myself, i bought a mk2 gti with tsr flowed head, eibach ARBs, eibach springs, koni dampers, amd ecu etc tons of kit, and a broken gearbox

ill have it back together in a few weeks. once thats done, ill finally have a real gti lol

oh, and red 'I' badges on mk4s mean nothing.
