He drives the current fiesta model which can do 48mpg as quoted. The previous fiesta can only do 40mpg with the same engine, however I managed to get 45mpg out of it! :p

It's all depend on traffic, correct gearing and driving style. Careful driving won't work, relaxed driving should and also always anticipate the traffic in front of you in order to brake as little as possible.

For gearing, in 1.25 zetec, it is better to have 4th gear up the hill than 5th and if you feel your car is struggling a bit, always drop it down. The difference in mpg between 3rd, 4th and 5th are actually small. However, there is a big gap in mpg between (1st & 2nd) and (3rd,4th&5th) so it is always best to keep the rev low whilst on 1st&2nd, just change the gear up as soon as you can without any struggle.

my mate drives a ST and compains he only gets 160 from his full tank... i keep telling him its his driving style but he doesnt believe me.....

(driving style, full throttle, full brakes, full throttle, full brakes)

cant believe he only gets 160, he must be loaded!

Driving between 50-70 in my ST on the motorway when it is slightly busy i am hitting just under 40 mpg :)

i keep telling him the same, either he is driving it wrong, or the car is broken.

he uses rev limitor as a hint to change gear... and will "cruise" at 50mph in 3rd gear etc. then whines a ST is too expensive on fuel and that i shouldnt get one (im close to PX'ing from my 1.25 to one).

I mostly drive carefully, ie when i can ill be in 5th at 30mph (straight into 4th on any incline) but do use full rev range when going for a hoon down country lanes, or joining a motorway etc. With a 1.25 you need all of it to make any progress. Hell the driving instructor told me to use upto 5-5500rpm if i needed it. which is why im frustrated i only get around 30mpg. But then i suppose my motorway speed is around 70-80 (gps 65-75)

Hi Guys,

Looking for a bit of advice here.

I drive an 03 Fiesta LX 1.25 16V. I only seem to be getting about 60 miles from £10 petrol (fuel light coming on > £10 > fuel light on again ~60miles on the clock)

This is all town driving with just me in the car 90% of the time, I don't expect manufacturers quoted figures but I thought it would achieve more than that.

Recently did a trip 210 mile round trip all motorway / A road probably averaging around 75mph and this cost around £25-30 in petrol so working with £10 as about 2 gallons thats about 5-6 gallons of petrol which is 33-40mpg on the motorway...?

Maybe my calculations are wrong or maybe I expect too much from the car, can anyone shed any light?

Cheers

A rough calculation estimates that at:

10 pounds of fuel @ 101ppl = 9.9 litres = 2.18 Gallons (4.54 L / Gal)

60 miles / 2.18 Gal = 27.5mpg.

Given that you are only doing town driving that isn't that bad. Whilst your engine is small the constant stop starting and heavy traffic seriously dents fuel consumption. (For example my Octavia vRS (2.0l Turbo) manages a decent 33mpg on a normal trip whereas in town driving I am lucky to ever see 20mpg (stop and start traffic)).

Depends how you drive it, even a 1.25 fiesta will use a lot of juice if you are heavy footed. My wife used to own a Ka, and a full tank to the warning light from the brim did me 300 miles, and my wife usually managed 380-400 miles. All down to the driver! 30mpg is good in traffic, or in stop start traffic at speed. The same car gradually accelerating to 50mph and staying there on a motorway might get 55mpg easy!
