Mk7 Golf GTD

800-1000 miles per month - when I bought the car I only had a 4 mile commute to work, life circumstances changed and now my commute is just over 20 miles each way now

M135 is on a PCP and the new car would be as well, I'm basically looking to cut my outgoings where I can, if I can save a decent amount of fuel per month and maybe even drop my finance payment on the car a bit then that will help
So you're doing about 680 miles a month more than previous.

Fuel costs based on 680 miles:
At 30mpg average that is approx : £113
At 50mpg average that is approx : £68

So you're going to save about £45 per month on fuel by switching cars.

Doesn't seem worth it to me

Since the Mk7 was available - Nov 2012
The center console display/nav unit has gone through a few revisions and upgrades since then.

Even the Mk6 had a similar b&w dash screen.

Your maths hasn't included the saving across total mileage, just the increase.

1000 miles

30mpg Petrol @ 116.9 = ~£176.90
50mpg Diesel @ 118.9 = ~£107.96
Saving ~£68.94. Not to be sniffed at over a year - however, need to take into consideration cost to change (may wipe out the saving) and the fact that the new car is not as nice/good.

(Based on prices at my local morrisons this morning)

*actually - ignore this... just seen we're talking PCPs rather than outright ownership.

Leon FR TDI 184 are fairly cheap to pick up used and with the tech pack have the LED headlights, nav and the colour infotainment display. It shares the platform and engine with the Golf GTD. If you have Pro Nav currently then almost any other integrated Nav/infotainment system is going to be a downgrade, though it's nowhere near terrible.

I'd imagine the sale of the M135i should bag you a good one and few K back. All depends on how you value the fun/performance vs cost savings each month.

Think I need to check my mileage, I just estimated from the distance it is to work but I know I'm currently shelling out around £300 a month on fuel

I'll double check my bills again this month as maybe that was a particularly expensive month. I was probably wrongly just looking at the figure of £300 and assuming I could probably save £100 or so a month on fuel based on that

Just to add to the problem it would seem my BMW is in 2k neg equity on the PCP so it looks like it might be better just to suck up the MPG in the BMW. I may even have to use eco pro mode!

Looking at the numbers if you only did 1000 miles then you averaged ~17mpg*. If you averaged ~30mpg then £300 would get you nearly 1700 miles.

*Fuel cost dependent

It's always worth running the numbers properly, I've known lots of people who have tried to 'spend to save' and it either doesn't save anything, or saves so little that they should have just stayed in their more interesting car.

If you only did 1000 miles to £300 I think you need to investigate eco pro and a lighter right foot!

I do approx 2000-2500 miles per month in my M135i and I have averaged over 34mpg since day one. On a typical long drive I will see around 38-42mpg from it.

Stick with the BMW and control your right foot more.

Get one of those devices that lets you switch between engine maps. Then you can have a low power one for mpg and the standard one for more power :D
