MMO on console

With a proper MMO people would probably have to invest in a keyboard to communicate effectively and that right there alienates a lot of people. You know those "but playing on the sofa > bent over PC desk!!11" bunch who would moan about having a keyboard with them, those chatpad things might work but still awkward to use compared to a real keyboard.

If you can think of how much typing gets done in a remotely social guild on WoW (or during a raid) you can see what I mean, it'd get so tedious using a chatpad or virtual keyboard.

Edit: I could see something like Global Agenda working ok on consoles though.

Communicating with a mic works too. Did you know that before text there was this thing called talking.

As for consoles not being able to handle MMO that is just a joke. On a pc they have to make the game for mutiple platforms whereas a console they can design it specifically for that hardware.

Yeah because in your fairy tale land everybody has a microphone and puts it to decent use, right? Oh and on the PS3 headset users are quite a minority thanks to Sony deciding to not bundle a headset in with the system.

What are you on about? The PC is a single platform, unless you include OS X and Linux. I assume you mean different hardware.

Blizzard didn't have a hard time making it possible for almost every PC out there to run WoW did they?

Did i mention i'm not really into MMOs? Oops no i forgot to so you're taking my opinion as something way more significant than it is :p

The only MMO i've played are Guildwars (which arguably isn't a proper MMO) and Planetside (which certainly isn't a MMO). I didn't know much about the titles you've listed aside from SWG (which i've read about) so you've successfully quashed nearly all optimism i've had for a SOE MMO on the PS3, i hope you're happy with yourself!

But but... this is an mmo thread!

And you don't need a Xbox Live Gold subscription for FFXI on the 360 as well. And this is probably one of the few reasons why it is hard for Square-Enix to do the upcoming FFXIV for it as there are also problems with Microsoft.

well you need a big online player base to get an mmo working... and online gaming on consoles didnt really get into fill swing until this gen. FF14 is the first and upcoming major console mmo of this generation so i guess we'll have to wait and see if it works :)

Well all my friends have mics and put them to good use. If you have a decent guild and are prepared to pay £15 per month then I am sure £20 for an official PS3 mic isnt going to break the bank.

Yes I am talking about PC hardware. They have to be able to run the game on low end systems. With consoles they have a good mid-range platform that everyone has. Designing a game for one console with fixed hardware is easier than designing for the millions of types of different custom pcs.

Yes Blizzard have done it low end pcs, which proves my point.
