MMO that you're looking forward to?

I have to say it does annoy me no end that sandbox type skill based mmo's seem to have become inextricably linked with full open PvP.

It's the main reason pre-nge SWG was my favourite game ever, you could do pretty much anything you wanted without worrying about some twit with more time than manners on his hands smacking you and nicking your stuff :)

Well it does kind of need full open pvp in order to be truly sandbox, after all a sandbox game is defined as :-

The term sandbox refers more to the mechanics of a game and how, as in a physical sandbox, the user is entertained by his ability to play creatively, boundless of artificial structural constraints, and with there being no right way of playing the game.

If a player cannot attack another player because a game mechanic simply prohibits him from doing so then that would constitute an "artificial structural constraint" and thereby negate it from that definition of sandbox.

Perhaps we need to define them differently and have two distinct terms, say Sandbox MMO and Open World MMO. So that something like Ultima Online would be a Sandbox MMO and something like SWG would have been an Open World MMO.

Ah, but sandbox games themselves are artifically constrained, in that there are rarely consequences for evil deeds. Quite the opposite, in fact. A true sandbox would allow you to, for example, incarcerate the perp for the rest of his life if you caught him, effectively banning his account.

If you're going to have free and open PvP, you need terrible, real consequences or everyone just acts the prat.

Oh I agree, UO went some way towards decent consequences, though I dont think banning the account should be one of them as thats using a solution which is exterior to the game itself whereas I think things should be done ingame. Jailing isnt a bad idea though, it would be pretty cool if villains were locked up in jail and then the villains gang/guild could break them out of jail, wild west style and so forth. Of course the villain would have to be captured in the first place and I dont mean a GM turning up and clicking a button, I mean properly tracked down and captured.

Well yeah, I don't mean an actual account ban, but all they can do is log on and pace their cell. And watch their skills decrease over time through lack of use :)

Well, I've pre-ordered Cataclysm, just out of boredom. I know it wont be anything great but need a 'decent' MMO to play. Also I've bought and been dissapointed with too many other MMO's in the past, so I don't bother anymore (DF,AoC,WAR,Aion). Too many failures, I stick with the safest option now, sadly :/

You know the MMO genre is in a bad way when WoW is as good as it gets

Star Wars: The Old Republic
World of Darkness
Warhammer 40k

Pre-ordered Cataclysm as well though more so that I was bored with the other MMOs while waiting for any of those three to be released.

Mmm, thats a good mention, but with the truly epic fail of Warhammer: Age of Reckoning I'm not hoping for much there either.

W:AR, while the RvR combat has promise and entertainment, some of the lore choices in the game have me completely baffled. Also, its a formulaic WoW combat system all over again....

Hopefully they'll of learnt by WAR's downfalls and worked on them.
WAR was good whilst it lasted, it'd be great with a revised combat system, it just feels clunky imo, and a larger player base. As the PvP/RvR is great fun at times

Guild Wars 2

Hats of to Blizzard tho, still chruning out WOW expansions, patches, graphics updates etc..... then again, its not a free to play game........ So I guess its to be expected!!

Nothing recently has peaked my interest, in fact thinking of starting my sub again for DAOC still is my favourite MMo.

I see no one has mentioned TERA. Whilst i'm not hyped for any MMO anymore (i try to stay grounded after being burned too many times). TERA seems to add a bit more action to MMO's by giving you a crosshair to aim with even if your swiping your sword it has to be in the right direction etc. Seems very interesting.

StarWars the Old Republic, been following it for over a year now and it looks like my kind of MMO so long as they get pvp right i.e. it is available to those that want to take part. As mentioned early SWG was great with open world pvp is you flagged yourself as wanting to participate :)

Currently playing Lotro casually.

I'm looking forward to trying Secret World, Blade and Soul, Rift - Planes of Telara.

Possibly the new Star Wars one.

Tera's pve does look like a real breath of fresh air, and the graphics are stunning. Still waiting for some pvp information about the game though. What worries me is that such advanced fighting mechanics will be really difficult for a small development studio to pull of consistently. Updates and new content would be a nightmare if each encounter is so rich in depth and quality.

True, but if the PvP works in a similar way to what they promise with the PvE and they give us large open areas similar to DAoC, then PvE content can come in slower as players busy creating their own fun in PvP. They just need to keep PvP ranking progress slow so that it's not something you can cap within the first few months.
