Hi ive been playing a lot of pc games recently since i got a new rig, mainly open world games and survival games like dayz and the forest. But ive never actually played a mmorpg game before and im wondering if im missing something. Is there a game that would best suit a newbie like myself to the genre? at the moment i find wildstar intriging and ive no issue with monthly subscriptions and stuff like that.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated, thankyou.

WildStar is great, im still loving it and I have played a lot of MMO's over the years.

If you don't have an issue with a sub I would give it a go.

Well the usual suggestions are.
Guild wars 2 [no monthly fee, just one off payment]
and
Star trek online [completely free]

I have heard too many bad things about
the elder scrolls online to recommend you avoid it

not tried wildstar myself though

World of Warcraft is free to play up to level 20 so cant hurt to give that a go - try Star Wars The Old Republic which is free to play (though it is rather restrictive,) Lord of the Rings online is free to play, as is Rift I believe.

All worth giving a go to see if MMO's are your thing.

WoW.

You can play free to L20 and it remains the most polished MMO out there. If you do enjoy it, the world is massive with plenty to keep you entertained. I would suggest doing a combination of questing and dungeons. Don't do too many dungeons as you level way too quickly.

There are plenty of social guilds out there and raiding is extremely easy to get into.

quite a few mmos (paid ones) have 14 day free trials (usually with a level cap too) so you can just pick up what ever and give it a whirl.

only probably is I find to properly enjoy an MMO you need to be doing it with friends, either RL or one's that you make in game. running around by yourself can be boring as sin... but throw some friends in the mix and it takes some of the grind out of it :)

WoW - decent, the generic MMO to which pretty much anything MMORPG like is compared against. quite a lot to do, lots of end game content, pretty damn easy for new players as they've added billions of tool tips and hints.... basically hold your hand through the game xD

SWTOR - loved this when it came out, loved the story lines as they made you more involved over the genericness of wow. though lacked end game content so wasn't much to do at top level. it's now free to play I believe but with paid benefits from having a premium account? meh :(

ESO - like but never really got into the elder scrolls games... gave this a whirl. pretty fun to be fair! but after buying the game and playing my free month....decided not to sub. this was mainly due to our clan losing some interest in it and everyone was spread out through the levels so getting groups was a pain as would either be super easy for some or silly hard.

Runescape - oh lord....lol....free to play, simple graphics.... not really sure as not played it much (like 5 mins on an ex's brothers account lol ) but seems to be made up of billions of kids.

EvE - pretty cool space mmo but a brutal learning curve and will take a while to work towards anything you want to due because of its skill learning system. but it is pretty fun :D but the most expensive to sub for.... unless you're pretty good... then you can make enough ingame money and use that to pay for the sub... which I think all mmos should have xD

there are soooooooo many MMOs out there it is unreal, tera, aion, knight online etc etc etc etc etc.... see if any of your mates play some or are interested and just see what takes your fancy and give it a go :)

I've just returned to Ultima Online after about 8 years xD back in the day it was amazing, great community, well populated world, cheaper :p but now it's 9.99 a month (thanks EA.....), and unfortunately... not so well populated (like.... barely see others out and about :( ) this was my first MMO I played and had the first guild/gaming community I joined :D lots of fond memories.... but as I said..... a big part of it I feel is who you play with.... and now all my guild aren't active (last was last month... before that... 2012 :( ) and the decreased population on the server it does feel a bit lonely :(

I would recommend a free to play MMo like Rift to test the waters. The game doesn't have many restrictions and certainly has a healthy player base.

Cracking game, plenty to do and an excellent class building system.

The Secret World is well worth a look, you can pick it up cheap and the F2P model is excellent. Best in-game acting, ever :)

Guild Wars 2 is very pretty and accessible but ultimately a bit shallow.

Rift is an excellent tester - completely free, looks great, loads of depth.

World of Warcraft - pandas. Seriously, pandas?

Thanks for the advice, i would definetely like to get into starwars, im a huge fan and loved the kotor games back in the day, sadly though as im new to pc gaming i have no friends on steam yet and my real world friends dont even have pc's, so would need something fun for solo play. Oh and are the graphics decent on these games? i have a decent setup so it would be nice to utilise it in one of these games.
Also if you do get into GW2 or STO I will join you for a game here and there, maybe even some Teamspeak/skype too, get a good run of it going

Thanks mate that would be great., my steam id is JimJoeRooney if you or anyone wants to add me.

Putting in a vote for GW2 here, only been playing a few months, and I have feel I have already got more than my money's worth of fun out of it.

the starwars game should keep you pretty entertained with the main story mission at least. after that I found it got a bit stale and couldn't be bothered to go through the other story lines :p quite liked the PvP of huttball though! :D

hummmm on the general scheme of things, graphics in MMOs are relatively decent. think Aion was the best/most intensive as it was on the crysis engine.... but damn!!!!! that cloth movement and spell casting sprites!!! :D worst being runescape/Ultima online*

*I say ultima online as that would be the opinon of most. personally I love them as they are simple and to the style of the game (and baring in mind it was released in '97....lol)

again... most is comparable to wow :p

also with regards to playing with others, have a look on threads of the games here as they usually have some OCUK guild/community so can probably hook up with them and get on some comms :) or just ask and as porushinobu showed, usualyl a good few people will send out invites to come join them :)

community is key :) with WoW I know my guild is still going strong and I could just jump back on any time and jump straight back in**

**after all the grinding to get to the new level cap and grinding all the gear to allow me to enter and run with them on the end game raids xD but people usually have a few alt characters so they can always jump on with them to run with you and reduce the level difference :)

I always feel Rift is a totally underrated game. Great class system, good instances and plenty of players about to get stuff done.

Emm, Before you try MMO's why don't you try a single player game that's sort of like an MMO. Skyrim, Dragon Age Origins, Mount and Blade warband.

while they are not MMO's, they give you a rough idea of what they are like.
