I have been thinking of the idea of getting into an MMORPG as I need something to make use of my pc with! I would like to play WOW and city of heroes, but I dont want to pay for the monthly subscription because I will only be playing for a couple of hours a week (unless I get sucked in).

Ive seen that Guild Wars: Factions is out soon. Would that be a good starting point? I also like the fact that there are no monthly subscriptions. Im not one for joining guilds/clans simply because of time commitments, but I like the idea of playing online as there is a lot of variation. Please dont recommend Oblivion as I already have it on the 360 but my bro plays it mainly. Cheers :)

If you want one just to test try Anarchy Online. Is a little old now compared to WOW, EQ2 and EVE but it is free for a year and will give you a flavour of what can be done.

I think this is probably as good a starting point as any.

go to www.anarchy-online.com for more details.

Also in this months pc gamer there is a 14 day trial for city of villians if you want to check that out.

Guild wars is a good game, don’t worry about the time played if you want to join a guild it’s the best way to learn the game and also opens up another side of the game and some people only play a few times a week.

The original guild wars is good and cheap at this stage, but isn't really a proper mmorpg - all the actual areas that you adventure in are instanced, ie. it's just you and your party. It's an excellent game however, well worth checking out especially as a first game.

Most mmorpgs have 14 day trials, I'd check out their websites and see what's available. Some need a buddy key, but a quick post here will usually get you what you need.

For your first MMORPG I'd so go with Guild Wars. You don't have to pay subscriber fees, so you can try it out, see how it all works, and duck out at any time if you don't like it. There's demos of other games like EVE online too, and anarchy online as mentioned above, so also try these.

In my opinion World of Warcraft is the better, more fun, more accessible and addictive game, but the costs of subscribing do add up (to get to the top level 60 you'll probably need about 4 - 5 months of play time - and even then there's more to do that could take you years, like the 40-man dungeon runs where you get the better weapons / armour / spells etc.). At £9 a month I've probably spent over £100 on it. Basically I'm just one of a long stream of addicts to World of Warcraft.

its true, but i'm not going to say how its done, I tried it once, but there was absolutly no life in it (ie: about 10ppl on a realm), so i just paid for the monthly subscription.

Aha, so it is possible. :)

I'm assuming that because you aren't saying how it's done it's illegal?

It's Illegal and you get a ping 1000+ so it's not even worth playing on Pirate servers. My advice don't play any MMORPG's I tried wow what a waste of money stick to the FPS's xD

Removed. It's quoted in another post though.

Sorry, I didn't know it was illegal when I posted it. Thought it was just like another server which you could go to (like with FPS games).

About which MMORPGs to start with, Guild Wars is a good choice, even if it isn't a proper MMORPG. It's a good cheap way to get into online gaming though, as the community is the most important aspect of such games, learning how to give and receive help with items, quests, and also building up respect/joining a guild.

The Factions expansion pack looks interesting. No doubt the Assassin class will give some 'n00bs' an incentive to try it out and play a cool-looking class. I'll be getting it but I'm also waiting for the Burning Crusade expansion pack to come out for WoW too! £9 a month isn't much these days anyways. Spoilt for choice these days....

there is EVE but for new players its so hard now, plus the nerfed virtually every weapon in the game :(

same with Matrix Online, no point in starting now, basically because everything was nerfed, and i joined top Faction, and also had a top pvp character, and i was bored. and the fights got tireing :/

MMORPGs are great if you're willing to go the whole hog, play for several hours a time several times a week and forego pretty much all other gaming and entertainment to keep the habit going.

You do have to put the effort in and get involved in a good guild with plenty of other players your level that you get on with in order to make the most of it though. I played WoW for a couple of months and would highly recommend it unless, like me, you don't have the time or dedication to put in.
