MMOs: Charge for time played?

Most MMOs are supported by the hardcore players. People want to have all the awesome gear and be just like whoever it is that's popular in that game (e.g. Kungen in WoW).

If people have to pay per hour played, they wouldn't play hardcore because they'd have to pay more.

the way i look at it i pay £8.99 per month fo my SWTOR acount so £2.25 per week so for the cost of a cheap pint i can play as much as i like, not to bad in my opinion.

The way I look at it I can play Skyrim, Civ V, GW, GW2 for £0.00 per month, and I can play the games I've already fully purchased anytime I want without having to pay more to be able to log in and play.

And then I can drink an extra pint per week which you cant :p

Never happen, but a rebate?

15 quid up top, and like if you only logged say for 5 hrs in the month, 10 quid comes back.

As an example.

Never happen, but would give an incentive for those that wouldn't sub up to a mmo knowing they often don't have the time... aka me, and chances are the majority would go over 15 hrs in the month anyway, given the addiction factor.

A non starter, but can't recall ever seeing that one tossed around.

What if MMOs charged per hour played instead of a fixed amount every month, with the max charge not going much above what they charge now. **** idea or decent idea?

Play an hour a week, pay hardly anything, play 10 hours a day, pay full price.

This used to be the model for quite a few games.

They changed to monthly for good reason.

Definitely but I think there will always be a place in the MMO market for a big title with a subscription fee attached. If it's better than the competition then people will pay it.

I would prefer it if it was a sub for ALL content, not sub for half and then have an item shop for the rest.

it's starting to get ridiculous really, but we as customers don't have a say

I agree mate. I think both models work well in isolation but when they merge it just strikes me as being greedy. However Blizzard is a business and one can only assume the decision to introduce the in-game shop worked out well for them. Only the customers can buck the trend and evidently they're loving it.
