Moana 2

The original main cast are back for this. I saw the first back in 2016 and thought it was OK, not sure of the desire for a 2nd TBH but, as Hollywood is pretty much only pumping out Prequels & Sequels this summer, I'm not that surprised either. It'll be interesting if this can beat the current Disney woes as the first, again back in 2016, was made just on the cusp of Disney's changing ideas and their animation studio system since just can't break out a financially good film (Encanto is possibly the best thing since in 2021 which 'may' have just broken even).

Opening only in theaters Nov. 27, 2024, “Moana 2” reunites Moana and Maui three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced. Starring Auli‘i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson as Moana and demigod Maui, respectively, directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller, and produced by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino, “Moana 2” features music by Grammy® winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foaʻi, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina.

I was going to start this thread but was beaten :D

I'm also looking forwards to M2 (or m.2 with this being a tech forum!) As @ianh said, Moana/2016 was at the tail end of Disney's 2nd renaissance which covered the Princess and the Frog, Tangled, Brave, Frozen and Moana. Good old fairytale stuff. At a push, I would say that Ralph Breaks the Internet is just about covered in the 2nd renaissance.

Disney's 1st renaissance btw was the 1990s which covered Aladdin, Lion King, Mulan etc, again, fairytale stuff.

2019 onwards, Disney pushed hard with Marvel and Star Wars and I think everyone is now "Marvelled out". It's just not Disney. Disney for me is what Disney did best - fairytales. Encanto, as already mentioned up-thread was promising though and I did also enjoy the recent Enchanted sequel, Disenchanted. Do more stuff like that (animations, live action and hybrids) and we might be pukka again. "Messages" in films are ok e.g. "ohana means family, nobody gets left behind or forgotten" (Lilo & Stitch), and "just be yourself, don't pretend that you're a prince" (Aladdin), but drop the performative virtue-signalling mesages.
