Moana 2

I didn't realise Moana 2 is already out, thought it was this coming Friday.

Disney's had a few rough years, so I hope they can pull back again (non-Marvel) with Moana 2 and other fairytales, and I also have high hopes for the upcoming Lilo & Stitch film. I don't have high hopes for Snow White though as it's been addled with politics, already doomed.

As long as they don’t ruin ‘Hawaiian rollercoaster‘. Though my hopes are already slashed a bit because they’re, apparently, not using Ving for Cobra Bubbles

Disney now occupies the top 3 spots in the 2024 world box office. I can't comment on the top 2 entries (Wolverine and Inside Out), but I saw Moana in mid-December and there was no performative agenda / political message in it. It was faithful to the 2016 original and it was just a fun family movie. Hopefully Disney are now listening to the critics and produce similar calibre to Moana/Frozen/Tangled/Brave/Princess and the Frog again, which quite frankly wasn't a million years ago.

Our eldest daughter (5) adores Moana, she hasn't seen many of the other Disney films yet as she's quite sensitive and they contain some pretty perilous things (Lion King went badly!), we took her to see this as her first cinema trip and it was glorious. Not actually a huge amount happens (but then does it in the original?) but it's perfectly serviceable and is no more and no less than one could ask for. I'm very interested to hear that the film was actually patched together from a TV series that never was, that must have been a headache to do and really didn't seem detectable from me to be honest. I suppose the pitch meeting points of "they didn't develop the characters they introduced" is true, but not any less true than it would be for any other number of Disney films really.

Overall I score it a Happy Little Girl/10.

Same thoughts, took my boy and he enjoyed it, it's inoffensive reasonably enjoyable to watch, it's a kids film at the end of the day, people who do these reviews tend to forget that.

My boy wants to see the Minecraft movie next.... I know it's for kids but I am truly worried about the acting quality from what I've seen, we live in hope though.

Agreed, I do love a pitch meeting and it needs to make fun of the subject so I don't take it "personally" so to speak :p

Minecraft looks like a mess, hopefully not as my nephew has managed to talk about it enough to make my daughter aware of it. Not holding out much hope!

I tried a Mexican copy yesterday and we managed 10 mins before she said "let's watch it when I am 5 <6 months time>"

Didn't have the immediate curb appeal of the original for some reason. I hadn't realised it was a patching together of a TV series. My wife did say it felt like a franchise that didn't need a follow-on.

Yeah I was side eyeing at the beginning, if she has siblings, especially a sister then that may pull on the separation anxiety strings a little bit.

In terms of the IP yeah it definitely doesn't need a follow on and wasn't as good as the original. Has there been a case where a rare Disney sequel is as good as the first?
