Im asking this on behalf of a friend.

She gave her contract phone to her hubby who is working away in Egypt. He has put a Egyptian sim card in and has been using it for the past few months. However it has now been damaged and been sent back to her in the UK. She is thinking about putting in a insurance claim for it.
However she is concerned that EE could check and see that it has not had her sim card in and also has been used in Egypt.
My thoughts is the phone is the physical phone it should not matter what sim card is in it.

Whats your thoughts ?

The insurance shouldnt have anything at all to do with EE, you should be able to put in any sim or even no sim and it will be covered as the insurance company even if they got it through EE will no doubt just be outsourced. As for would the phone be covered in Eygpt you would have to check your Ts&Cs to see what is exempt.

She was panicking as someone told her the imei number could be used to see if she had been using her phone with her sim.

But like you said its the phone thats damaged not the card.

This is no doubt true, but insurance companies dont have access to information like this I dont think, Some mobile insurance companies try and figure anyway out of paying up so make sure you tell her to read Ts and Cs before claiming there are certain exemptions like losing it on public transport is generally not covered.

Insurance is insurance, doesn't matter where it's being used as it's a mobile phone at the end of the day...
