Sorry for a spec me thread.

My daughter is 10 and for Christmas she wants a mobile phone :( . Can't blame her really as all of her peers have them.

Anyway, I have been pressurised into getting her one, so it will be my choice.

I want something reasonably cheap ( 80 quid should cover it ), and something quite robust. I can see it getting lost or damaged quite easily.

I had settled on the Samsung Genio Touch - seems quite funky for a kid. Although Vodafone have now discontinued it; with Vodafone being the only network we can receive where I live.

Any other suggestions please?

To be totally honest, that's way too much on a starter phone.

U want something that does the job, is not a target for theft and will not make much difference if lost.

My lads(edlest around same as yours) use the Samsung £10 disposable types (.ie free phone when u top up £10).
Once your daughter gets used to having one, then maybe get her a better phone, but I would definitely say its a bad idea to start with.
I know its pressure from others, but nothing worse then her Christmas present going missing after a few weeks.

I completely agree. If she just wanted a mobile for phoning and texting; the group of kids around our way all take videos and play mp3s too. I would like her to be able to join in, kids can be cruel little ****s when you are the odd one out.

Get her that Samsung BlackBerry rip-off. Forgot what it's called but it's main target consumer market is for people around your daughers age. Has facebook etc so she shouldn't be getting bored of it too soon.

*I've never used one so it could be a pile of poo

The Nokia C3 looks pretty good, full qwerty keyboard, available in pink which also might make it less prone to getting lost, has facebook, twitter etc, MP3 player, camera and for all the bad things you can say about nokia they do make a robust phone. Nokia 7230 looks good also.

I would say get her a basic phone and give her a weekly allowance for topups in exchange for helping out around the house, doing well in school, etc. Give her the option of putting aside a portion of her allowance towards a new handset so that she has to figure out which is more important: A new phone with all the bells and whistles or being able to talk and text longer.

I agree with making her earn her topups. Currently she doesn't get pocket money, we have everything she needs and she gets it when she is good. We will have to formulate a plan of housework and dog walking for her to earn a minimal amount for her topups.

Think we will go with the Genio touch, the highstreet chain beginning with A has them.

Thanks for advice.
