Hi

My tariff with Vodafone allows me to have unlimited use of the internet with my handset(n95 8gb)

But does it cover when connected to a pc to make a net connection? Or will I be charged accordingly?

Thanks.

I've been using my phone as a modem for the past few days as I've had some issues with my ADSL, just checked online and I've not been charged.

I think as long as you don't go over the 500mb fair usage, then I cant see it being a problem.

I believe Three have a clause for their handset data add-on that prohibits use a modem, but I've never heard of it being enforced. Might be worth checking the T&C's.

The question is how could they find out exactly ? If can only cap your usage, how quickly you hit that cap is no consequence to them.

They can identify modem use easily because the computer will dial *99# on the phone to start a new data connection.

That doesn't actually place a call through the network though, that is just a command to the phone to connect to the data service. It looks no different than when you fire up whatever browser you might have on your phone.

The only thing they could (but wouldn't since its probably not worth the hassle) is user agent. But with firefox you can feign user agents easily, and using something like mobile explorer or opera mini would suffice. Or IMO and even better idea, is to actually use Opera mini on your PC, since it loads websites immensely quickly, uses less data (so you won't attract as much attention as a full fat browser), and would also use its own user agent data :)

//Edit: Whenever i'm stuck in need of internet on my laptop through my phone using Opera mini on the PC is a dream, since lets face it 3g is quick only compared to 2g...

Hi Tupac,

Just seen your post and I'd like to help.

In terms of using your phone as modem there's nothing to prevent you from doing this but if you do it's worth being aware that you'll probably use the Mobile Internet fair usage allowance pretty quickly.

If you're considering hooking up to the internet on a regular basis then Mobile Broadband might be an option for you as this'll give you greater freedom. If you'd like some more information on this just click on the link I've provided.

Hope this helps.

I've got the 3 X-series package and hardly use any data, what do people use mobile internet for?

I occasionally use Fring, check email and surf, but only use around 20mb a month.
