Does such a thing exist? Mobile me on my iphone enables me to sync outlook (2007) calendars and contacts across the air to my phone/laptop/desktop without the need to plug everything in. Does such an alternative exist in the android OS? This is the only thing keeping me persisting with apple and potentially a new iphone?

Just to completely clarify, you want MS ActiveSync but you don't have an exchange server? MobileMe has a whole bunch of services so I'm just trying to work out exactly what you want.

Contact syncing is automatically done to your google account on andriod, along with calendar syncs with google calander pretty much any service google has can be natively sync'd with andriod os.

And if there is something else you need syncing there will be an app for it :)

sorry I should have made it clearer. I don't use an exchange server just IMAP accounts. My contacts and calenders are stored locally on my PC and mobile me lets me sync these across to my laptop and iphone and vice versa. I can't really use google mail because I have half a dozen IMAP emails relating to domain names.

Mail at least is easy - IMAP is designed with multiple viewers in mind so I don't see how this would be a problem as Android email clients have a combined&solo feed mailbox setup.

Kies (Samsung specific software) allows for "airsync" or whatever they call it but it works over wifi/usb IIRC.
HTC Sync is similar but I think it's USB based (the handsets I test tend not to work with the software so if I'm wrong please correct me).

I guess if i was in your situation I'd consider if constant calendar updates/contact updates were worth the additional cost/handset requirement (or sync both of these with the google desktop sync). I must admit I've never really had this issue as I've always had Exchange activeSync as an option to me but I can see why this would be a pain.

thanks Myshra, yeh the email will be a snip

mobile me is a great tool, I'm always updating my calander and contacts so it's great because everything syncs & I don't end up with dup contacts or out of date numbers here and there etc. I will take a further look into the HTC and samsungs on offer, who makes the nexus prime that everyone is going on about?

i have all my contacts / files / calendar on google, so yes it syncs, i then use google sync to sync my work outlook with google, so everything goes to my phone

The Nexus Prime is the next Google device, so stock android with no sync based pc program,

Not sure you'd really need one though, surely you could:

Use Google Calendars, this can be synced/used in outlook,
Use Google mail for your Contacts, I believe Outlook can use this one address book across multiple accounts (Thunderbird definitely can)
Use outlook on your pc and either the stock email app or one of the several others to access all your email accounts via IMAP

Think that covers everything?
