Mobile phones, anyone else who doesn't need one?

:)

Some cars don't even have a screen. Like the VW Up. They have holder so you can use your own phone instead.

I've only got old cars. None have fancy head units.

I doubt anyone on OCUK who drives is unable to rustle up £20 for a phone holder.

I made the mistake of assuming that ttaskmaster was discussing in good faith, but given the admission that he's just trolling, I'll stop wasting my time.

hate to break it to you, but the flat earther here is the luddite unwilling to embrace change.
Assuming you're meaning me, you've yet to actually show how these changes you're talking about are in any way better for me...

As for embracing change, I think you've 'overshot the landing zone' on this one, though, you blue-sky thinker... "Embracing change" is just how businesses guilt-trip employees into following the company attempts at appearing relevant, or make it look like they're achieving something. That doesn't mean it's a good idea and more often than not it's just a waste of money by a new CEO looking to put their own stamp on things. The one that comes after usually changes it back, while trying to present it as innovation and another change to embrace.

You show me something that I need and is actually good (and affordable), and I'll happily embrace it. So far you've mostly just come up with solutions looking for problems.

Oh, it began in good faith... but as predicted, people cannot accept that their particular way of life doesn't work for everyone else, while not even listening to the points raised that explain why, at which point I stopped caring.

Okay, so it was better in every way you can possibly imagine... and yet the person with the choice still chose the longer route, so it clearly wasn't better... just shorter.
Incidentally, the shorter routes through certain places often take three times as long due to all the traffic lights and are depressingly dull journeys. Shorter is not always better.

Turn on the twisty roads or scenic view option then.

butjourney length isn’t calculated by distance any more it’s calculated by real time gps data of every one else’s phone.

So lights frequent traffic jams or accidents etc are automatically routed rounds because Google probably already has the info from the last person to drive there.
Usually thousands of them

Think of it as having a CB radio and every other driver having one and being able to call ahead and ask about your route constantly

Navigation systems have been pretty much mainstream for what, the last 15-20 years?
A compass and an OS map are useful for certain things, sure - but if we're talking driving from destination A to destination B then even the biggest luddite would surely accept that a satellite navigation system (be it dedicated or installed on a phone) is pretty hard to beat.

How does grindr work on a map an compass?
masking for a friend?
is the torch involved some how too?

PM me your phone number, a/s/l and a signed release form... then I'll explain everything! ;)

Given my general experiences with CB, you're not exactly selling me on the idea!! :D

Then why do so many people, of all ages and tech levels, still seem to end up arguing with their satnavs or getting lost despite it being so damn good?

Yeah exactly this lol.

A certain % of a very large number is still a big number of people who are idiots. Also it makes good soundbites for sheeple to lap up.

TBf is usually they ignore the stanav thinking it’s wrong then take the wrong turn

Google maps sat Nav is now so good that I hardly ever get sent the wrong way. The risk of this happening weighed against faffing about with maps is a no brainer.

And this is coming from someone who knows how to orientate a map and read a 6 figure grid reference. Well I did know, when it mattered, before sat nav became ubiquitous.

Good luck with the tablet.
Which tablet?
Unless you've sent me one as a surprise gift, I wouldn't worry. They don't do anything useful over a smartphone and take up too much space.

I think I know the type. Claims to have good sense of direction, asserts that local knowledge always beats computers... yeh? :D

For me, it's mainly a portable interweb device, that can also take and make calls/texts. Hence I have a prepaid 24GB broadband SIM and a PAYG SIM installed.
