Mobile Phones

you can still watch the world go by only difference being you make a 30 second call to give you an idea of how long you gotta watch the world go buy ;)

- Annoying having to charge it, even if I have to do it only once a week

You simply plug it in when you go to bed. It isnt hard or irritating.

- With a mobile there is no 'escape from it all'

You can turn it off.

- Annoying having something on your person at all times

So don't take it everywhere.

-Annoying have to think to turn it off/put it on silent when entering libraires, cinemas etc

It's not that difficult - and if it is, simply leave it on silent all the time and use vibrating alert.

-Seeing them sitting around the house is literally on your desk is uncessary clutter

I think you are a bit odd :p

But its a mentality, we shouldn't feel the need to get updates al the time for everything. Take things as they come.

no ones forcing you to call them..my friends dont call me when im running late but i feel the need to call someone if theyre running a couple minutes late thats just me...

Get a spare battery, then all you have to do is swap the battery over once in a while.

Yes there is turn it off or put it on silent, then check it when you want

- Annoying having something on your person at all times
Don't find it annoying at all, I expect you still carry a watch, wallet, keys ect.

-Annoying have to think to turn it off/put it on silent when entering libraires, cinemas etc
pressing two buttons is so hard, it's 100x more effort to go to these places in the first place.

-Annoying being contacted pointlessly by your mates and other people, which you have to respond to with a mundane and time wasting text
You don't have to reply.

-It is frankly a cost for which does not bring much pleasure to me
Personal opinion

-I hate the culture of them and their effect on society - it has been proven how contingent they make social arrangement; that is, everything is always subject to change, things get cancelled more often because cancelling is only a phone call away
On the flip side, without it it's almost imposable to arrange things, especially at the last minute or when you are bored.
- They are uncomfortable to use if you have a lengthy conversation, due to their heat
 stop pressing it against your ear as hard as you can.

-Seeing them sitting around the house is literally on your desk is uncessary clutter
Very much necessary, without it People could arrange to meet up, do there jobs, phone break down services etc.
Not really much of a clutter if you have a space for it. Just liek the other 50 items you have on a desk..

Sounds like you just hate them, rather than any logical reason.

Of course it is personal opinion, you state it like you've destroyed my argument, lol - lighten up! (sounds like you are addicted)

There is nothing logical about my view, I am just philosophically opposed to them, the reasons were part of the reason the way I feel. Don't get so touchy sonny! :)

I'm not getting touchy. I just don't understand any of your reasons.

I lost mine and got annoyed because I lost phone numbers and the occasional good picture I had taken.

So I now have a crap thing but I don't even carry it around any more. Frees up my pocket, saves me money and now people actually come round to ask me stuff rather than phone me. Which I find much more sociable.

I don't hate phones, just it's something I have found I don't need.

Right, i'll bite.

1) How much effort is it to plug something in? Do you think the same about your mp3 player, laptop and basically anything electrical? And considering the amount of features a standard mobile phone has, it's hardly a hassle.

2) No escape from it all...yes i can see from where you are coming from but mobiles organise social lifes as well - silly things like losing your friends in a club. Quick text and you can find them again.

3) Get a man bag instead of shoving everything into your pockets. It's an extra thing that does a LOT.

4) Christ, do you just not like to be socialable and see how people are? Even a text to say 'Happy birthday' right the way to the scale of 'How was your day?'. Simple and quick.

5) A cost? Pay as you go is NOT expensive...

6) Fair point about society and whatever but it's a lot easier to organise things through text. Just a second ago i was asked if i wanted to go to the bar by text. I replied yes and the time, the answer was recieved 30 seconds later. I am now going to the bar later on.

7) ...no idea what the hell to say to that...

8) ...nor this...clutter? It's a small box!

As I say, I think the key point I wish to convey is the mentality it breeds. Its like information overload. It might be fun to wonder round a club finding your mates, you might bump into a nice bird. if everything is so pre planned and organised in life, it would get boring!

My mate went out without his mobile the other day, lost his mates in the club, and ended up going home in a taxi with four girls. I think thats a result!

Not trying to have a go but the "points" you made, made very little sense. Yes it is 'information overload' but good and bad information...things are organised quicker, information recieved and sent quicker. This matches the pace of life we're currently at where everything is extremely fast.

As for the club scenario, sure you MIGHT do but you might NOT as well. That was just one example. Ironically i just got a text message. :o

All those points are stupid, too stupid to argue with you about :p

The benefits outweigh the negatives for me. Being contactable and able to contact always is invaluable at times.

Stupid, perhaps.

Illogical, perhaps.

But I tried to simply say something other than, I hate and am philosophically opposed to what mobile phones represent. i thought it might be fun to hazard some reasons. Clearly, I have failed!

Still, I would encourage all to try living without one for a week - you might like it! :)

I think it's totally necessary for me. If I'm going to be late for something I can just text the person I'm supposed to meet and let them know.

In olden times people actually had to turn up for things on time (such ruddy madness).

As for the whole price issue, cant you put skype on mobiles these days so that if you are in a wifi hotspot, you can send/recieve skype to skype calls for free, and as for the skype to landline/mobile i have no idea what sort of price that works out like as i dont own a mobile myself, too expensive.

So what if the hot girl from the club sends me a text asking if i wanted to do something tomorrow night and i'd miss it as my phone would be missing? :(

You might never see here again, but there is the charm of life, its unpredictability.

Over communication stifles the eb and flow of everyday life. Like now, I am wasting too much time online but can't seem to remove myself. but then my wife is away so that is my excuse!
