Hey guys, just wondering how much of a performance boost i would notice if i switched laptops and went from a mobile sempron 3000 to a AMD turion MK36.

They are both single core but the MK36 is 64 bit.

Would it be worth the upgrade?

The 64 bit part won't make a difference - that will only change anything in a 64 bit version of windows running a 64 bit program. Even then, it won't be quicker but may be able to use more RAM.
The turion may however perform better if it has a higher clock speed (ghz) or more cache. So, it might be quicker but not because of the being 64 bit.

200mhz more clock speed and 512k L2 Cache instead of the Semprons (128k?) Will be quicker in everything, especially games, if you ever game on your laptop.

So the boost may be fairly slight, except in gaming tasks.
I'm not quite up on the mobile sockets but if a dual core Turion fits in your socket, then it's a much better value long-term upgrade. Even the cheapest Turion Dual-Core should provide a noticeable boost over the Sempron.
If you can't fit a dual core Turion, I would say you should look for a larger speed difference for an upgrade to be worthwhile (more like 600mhz) - so long as it isn't over - priced.
That said, the cache difference is quite large, so I would wait for advice from other users with perhaps better knowledge than me. I have heard that a 128kb cache is a real performance - killer in vista & the 512 kb is in line with most current athlon processors, so fine in this regard.

Well for an extra £36 i can get a turion TL-50 X2 @1.6GHz added. Is it worth getting the upgrade?

thats what I got..seems to be a fairly quick laptop with a tl50 1.6 gig but remember it will only have 256kb L2 cache and not 512 like the single core turions but I dont think it makes a huge amount of difference.

its definitely way faster than a single core turion as it beats a pentium 4 3.4 in si soft sandra cpu arithmetic benchmark. :)

The MK36 is socket S1 like the x2...not sure on the sempron. I think it depends on the core name of it whether its a keene (Socket S1) or lots of others, socket 754.
