Mobile speed camera - wrong location?!

No, but you called them a "bunch of.........." which might indicate that you were annoyed at them for getting caught speeding.

Instead, don't break the limit, and the camera vans suddenly cease to matter :)

I thought they were a bunch of ...... before they possibly caught me speeding. Nothing has changed there.

And frankly 'oh noes I was doing 10mph over the limit on a rural, wide, fast A road keeping with all of the other traffic.... BABY KILLER!'

How are the ***** for doing their job and prosecuting people for illegal behaviour?

If they targetted accident hotspots etc as they are supposed to do then they may get more sympathy

they recently changed a epeed limit on a road a few hundred yards from my house, they have then had a van there at least once a week, usually hidden behind another vehicle, this road had not had any accident afaik in the 12 years I have lived here

reducinga ccidents is one thing but when it smacks of a money making excercise that's when they lose sympathy

Are they obliged to put up signs before potential mobile camera sites or is it just the case that a camera sign can be for a site?

TBH OP if it's in a 30 I am happier with that than their habit of sticking them at the end of long well sighted NSL roads.

Oh, and the 10%+2 "rule" (which never any such thing) bit the dust at about the same time, before anyone quotes that.

Not strictly true.

They are ACPO guidelines which most forces will adhere to. You won'y usually get tickets for 31mph for example due to the chance of it being challenged in court and losing - thats why the guidelines were issued.

But the point to note here however is that they are guidelines, not a rule. Meaning that the officer can chose to prosecute for 31mph in a 30 should he wish.

That's more of an issue with councils changing speed limits for no reason and that annoys me too, but if the limit is set, you can't really complain for exceeding it.

Yep, bang on :)

Isn't 1mph in the margin for error though?

Well, that'd be for the court to decide, which is why the guidelines exist. If the speedgun is recently calibrated then the margin of error should be much less than 1mph, but there are other variables that the court would have to take into consideration.

Personally, I don't think it would be in the public interest to even try prosecuting for that and I hope any Sgt reviewing the file would agree and stop it going any further.

Risk speeding, get caught take it like a man, dont want to get caught dont speed, its that simple really.

Ive been done once for speeding, and once for running a red while luckly in the speed limit.

thankfully my license is clear now.

Not particularly aimed at timbob, but I always wonder on these threads how many of the posters who state this point of view actually stick to the limit at all times.

I would think not many stick to the speed limits however I would assume most people posting that point of view wouldn't be moaning if they got caught.

On a side note, there was a van down the road from me last year which I thought was a mobile speed camera but on driving past it it said that was a tax/insurance checker (can't remember the name of it) but if they can fit it in a police car then didn't see why the needed a van so drove past it slowly lol.

Just to clear this up a little - I was speeding, think it was like 35mph in a 30mph zone. I wont fight the ticket, I was just wondering what the "law" was as I always thought they had to delcare the vans accurate location.

I have no idea.

When (I think) I was caught last week, there was absolutely no indication whatsoever that there was going to be a van round the bend. Although the van was 3-400 yards up the road from the bend, although I believe they can get you as soon as they can see you.

I could barely see the van and drove at it for a couple of seconds before I clocked it and stood on the brakes (always nice and safe to stand on the brakes on a NSL road with no warning or apparent reason ;) ).

I can see that but the Police are then exploiting this to generate revenue, competely ignoring the guidleines as to where they should be used (there is a guideline re accident statistics)

They're a bunch of ****s though.

You would only react like that if you've been caught.

Which to be honest, if you can't see a big white/yellow van at the side of the road with camera signs plastered all over it, you're clearly not paying enough attention to the road, and hopefully it will serve as a reminder you should be giving the road 100% of your concentration, whilst operating a machine that has the capacity to do a lot of damage...

cos they never hide them out of sight, do they? :p

1) The police do not get any of the money.
2) Neither do the council that runs the cameras

Fines go directly to central government. Sometimes the government hands money back in grants to pay for road improvements, but there's no direct link to fines gathered.
