I've got the speedtest.net broadband app on my SGS2. When I had my 10mb virgin media connection on my PC, I was getting 9.5mb wi-fi download speed on the phone's speedtest app when the phone is right next to my PC. VM have now switched me over to 60mb on my PC which is awesome and the phone is giving me 14.3mb wi-fi with speedtest. Is that the maximum the phone can do via wi-fi or should it be capable of closer to 60mb?

Just did the test again and got 15931 kbps.

Am I meant to set up wifi direct instead of the normal wifi?

That is quite likely all you are going to achieve if you're using a G-rated wireless hub / router.

I only get around that on my Lumia 710 on VM 60MB.

Tbh, due to the processing speed of the phone, I don't think getting the full 60MB would make much difference. App downloads I guess, but many aren't too big.

Well, someone on XDA says he gets close to 40mb download on his SGS2 using a kh3 phone modem.
