mobo failure or GPU????

recently my pc started to give me problems. It all started when I would sit at my pc, I'd move the mouse fully expecting to see the log-in screen appear. All I could see was a black screen and a message saying "no signal". I assumed it was the graphics card. I sent it back to the shop for checking. They said that it worked fine. While the card was away I put an older pci card in which was much smaller and everything now works. Because of the size of the old card I am limited to not having any gpu options such as screen resolution i.e. everything looks giant.

If the graphics card was not the problem then what is?? Does anyone know if it is possible for the pci express slot on the mobo to be the cause of the problem in the first place.

If so what is the solution???

PLEASE REPLY........

Sounds like the graphics card has been set to a refresh rate higher than your monitor supports.

Using the original card and booting into safe mode should confirm this if the display then works.

I should get the original card back some time this week. I will let you know how I get on. Thanks for the feedback. by the way I tried the card in a different pci-e slot and it still didn't work.

Wouldnt that be a display driver setting, meaning that even when the old card was ut in, the refresh rate was still set to that and thus wouldnt recieve a signal?

Correct me if im wrong

The replacement card would use lower defaults and not the settings from the original card. And thats if it even used the original driver at all. Most likely just use the default Windows driver. Hence the 'large' resolution you saw.

if it gets past the bios with the graphics card in and far enough to get to safe mode deleting every single trace of the graphics card drivers then re installing might help
