Mobo from 2004 need cpu advice.

Hi guys.

I have a main work horse computer with a Abit AA8 Duramax socket 775 motherboard, and a standard P4 3.2Ghz socket 775 cpu.

The cpu is really starting to struggle with even just browsing the internet etc.... and at work, we bought some really cheap Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.33GHz Socket 775 cpu's.

Any idea, if my old motherboard can run this cpu? Its the same socket.

Obviously I realise that even if it was to work, Id still have to reformat the harddrive etc......

Nope, that motherboard will not run a Core 2 Duo CPU. It's the same socket but the chipset is wrong.

If it would run it, you'd see an exponential increase in speed.... but alas.....

Yea, at home on my P4 watching two live Flash streams of the world cup matches, it is really stuttering and cant cope with it at all.

At work, no problems.....

Seems I will need to get a new motherboard as well.

IIRC you need a p965 (or possibly 945?) chipset or higher to run core 2s

Iv found a cheap Q6600, this would obviously be a big upgrade from my P4 3.2Hz?

Any idea how the Q6600 performs in comparison to the Q8200?

Its not for gaming, just want something that is smother than my old P4 3.2

I'v found a q6600 combo with a mobo.

Its will only be used for general computing, browsing, watching movies, word processing etc...

No gaming!

That's a good price. But bear in mind you will need some ddr2 memory as well.

His current board uses DDR2 although would need to check speeds...

Does not seem bad for the money but its still a dead socket, I would be looking at an AM2+ / AM3 DDR2 based motherboard and a Athlon II X3 or similar.

Keep in mind that this would give you an upgrade path of Hex Core CPUs and higher.

Also will work with your current DDR2 memory but ideally you would want to be using PC6400 / 800MHz DDR2
