Mobo Issue?

Hi guys,

my friend is having an issue with his computer where it is no longer booting up. When he presses the power button the fans spin up but nothing displays on the screen at all.

His system specs:

RaidMAX Saggita case

Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700

Asus Striker Extreme

4Gb Corsair DDR2

ATI Radeon 4800 series (unsure what one as not seen the machine)

160Gb HDD

1000w Quiet Five Rail PSU

I've asked him to do the following tests to no avail:

- Change graphics card and test
- Take everything out leaving just cpu, mobo and 1 stick of ram to see if it posts

He has taken it to a PC repair shop who have said it is a motherboard issue but just looking for any other suggestions really?

Any help would be appreciated!

cleared cmos? leave the motherboard battery out a good 10 minutes then put back in and try

I can't think of any other items to test / check. Assuming the pc shop done a simple CMOS reset and tested the cpu & memory in another system with a quality PSU.

Only way is to get hold of another motherboard on the second hand marked.

I've not suggested CMOS just yet and haven't got a clue what the shop tested so will ask him to give that a try!

Plus the only problem with testing PSU is that I only have a spare 550w non-branded PSU spare would this be OK to test with?

I would suspect ram, tell him to try few times with different slots especially if he is on 4x1Gb, this psu will be fine to boot

Ok just text him and he said he's done a CMOS clear by removing the battery for a while then replacing.

He also used the CMOS clear button and switched the jumpers from position 1/2 to position 2/3 but no luck.

Will ask him to try different RAM slots but he is only using one 4Gb module.

If not i'll take my PSU round and test that to see if it boots.

EDIT: using 4x1Gb sticks

Well he's just tried the following again with no luck:

- testing each of the single 1gb sticks in each of the ram slots.
- testing spare 2gb stick in each of the ram slots.

Is it worth testing my spare PSU on Monday?

It might be worth it - just to be on the safe side.

Oke doke, cheers RJC and Morfinel will test the PSU monday.

If the issue persists would you come to the conclusion that it is a motherboard issue?

If so i will suggest either replacing with a second hand board off the bay or if he fancies a more up to date system waiting for the haswell refresh.
