Just opened P95 to test stability @ 4ghz on a Q6600 only to find the mobo was making an whinning/buzzing noise coming from the cpu area.
Swapped my psu over for another and still get the same problem.
The only weird thing is if i put it back standard settings you can hardly hear the buzz but the more you clock it the louder it gets  running 4ghz it buzzes for exactly 5secs (and quite loud too) then 1sec after it stops i get a bsod ending 0124 :(

Any ideas appreciated.

Specs.

Q6600 G0
P35 DS4 Rev2
4x 1GB Geil ULL
8800GTS 512MB
OCZ Gamexstream 850W (4 rails, each have 20A so should be enough power?)

The higher clocked the CPU gets the more power is needed as you probably know. Sounds like the capacitors/voltage regulators are having too much current put through them which is causing the noise. Shouldn't be making the noise when at stock though. Could be wrong however, let's see what other people think. :)

could be the voltage regulators cant think what else would buzz and like killer uk says if its only making it at high clocks can only think its that causing it

the coils will buzz like you describe. sometimes the core is a little loose, higher freq = higher current = more vibration of the core. the bsod probably indicates excessive oc unless you varified other components

Gonna strip it out later and run it on bare components with air to see what happens :p

Is strange as i had a highly clocked E6400 recently with the ram running 950mhz and i never had a problem so unsure if its cpu or mobo related

It's hard to explain the noise but it sounds like theres a jimmy cricket in there :D

Whistling capacitors are quite common. Unfortunately, Gigabyte went on a major cost-cutting exercise with the Rev 1.1 and Rev 2.0 DS4 and they are not as good clockers as the Rev 1.0 boards with the bigger cooling systems.

Thank you, that probably explains why im having so many issues over 3.6GHZ :(
Time for some homework on a new mobo :)
