Ok, not built a PC for a few years now as my old one did everything I needed basically... and had become bored with gaming so a top spec setup wasnt necessary.
Anyway....
On a whim I bought a pre-assembled PC that can be bought from a few retailers these days. (Not sure regarding current rules.... the forums used to be very strict on not mentioning retailers names?) Its only the second PC Ive ever bought off the peg as it were.
Its based around an AMD A10 5700 which of course has an iGPU. It basically works fine, im even beginning to warm to Win 8. Then I decided to go a route I hadn't planned to do initially... and bought an AMD 7850 to replace the iGPU.
This is when the problems began, firstly, rest assured I am posting on the right forum, as the damn mobo is the issue rather than the gfx card.
Basically the mobo (an oem product made by MSI, model no MS-7800) REFUSES to disable the iGPU. This results in me having to have the iGPU plugged into a monitor upon bootup even if a monitor is plugged into the 7850... if I dont, a split second after the booting up beep it emits the beeps for a video card problem and thats it. To get it to work I either have to boot with 2 monitors hooked up.... or swap the HDMI lead going to the monitor from the iGPU port to the 7850 port a few seconds after I turn it on. Basically in the first few seconds of boot it insists on trying to power up the iGPU, once past that and booting up Windows it powers up the 7850 just as my login name/ picure appear. Even then the iGPU isnt totally powered down, it will still keep a monitor "awake", but on a black screen. Once booted the 7850 works fine by the way.
Spent hours on it tonight all to no avail. I should point out that though my tech knowledge isnt quite upto date I am still well versed with all the usual methods of trying to resolve an issue like this but just cant work it out. I seriously think its just a "feature" of this particular mobo.
Im pretty tired as I post this, but Ive tried all the following:
1) I bought a PSU to go with the 7850 upgrade, a 600w Corsair. Makes no difference. Tried another PSU... no good still.
2) Set the default graphics to PEG (PCIE Gfx) from Integrated, no change.
3) Cleared CMOS numerous times.
4) Swapped monitors over.
5)Tried an old 7800 Nvidia in the PCI E port, still the same.
6)Messed around with drivers etc... though its obvious the problem starts BEFORE Windows starts, hence must be a mobo issue.
7) Disable the iGPU in Device Manager though for reason above, knew that couldn't be the issue.
8) Reinserted the 7850 in the slot a few times just in case and checked the extra lead to the PSU is inserted ok too.
Probably tried other things too, but my mind is a blur by now!
In summary, the system is:
Win 8
Mobo: MSI made oem product with model number "MS 7800"
Processor: AMD A10 5700
GFX card: MSI 7850 OC
SATA HDD and DVD RW
8GB oem DDR3
Im tempted to get another mATX mobo and swap the lot over... but as Win8 came pre installed on the HDD with just a recovery disc.... I assume that I wont be able to use Win 8 on another mobo setup?
(Wish I had just built the PC from scratch like Ive always done in the past!)
Any info or advice really appreciated guys.
