bent the pins on my 1055t cpu and not dextrous enough to bend them back without breaking them (might sell the cpu/mobo). anyway, going to use it to go for a new intel system. i already have the ram, cpu and drives. just need a cpu and mobo.

the 2500k will do me i think but no idea on what mobo to get. i'd like at least 6 sata ports in all but not sure whether i'll overclock or not.

can anyone pls recommend me something?

ta :)

thanks, i don't need either ta :)

i was searching and found a thread recommending the z68 chipset for this cpu?
from there i found this
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-052-AK

is that one equal/better/ worse?

ta :D

Worse, well its older. Also, Asrock are a bit of a budget brand and I wouldn't buy one. So the Z77 has a few newer features like native USB3 and things, as theres not much in it price wise I'd get the Z77 MSI board :)

Z77 is for Ivybridge (i5 3570K and similar) but works equally well with an i5 2500K, as Z77/Z68 are the same socket.

holy carp. didn't think IB chips would be that cheap. prob is they have a heat problem though don't they? when overclocking i mean due to the high xtor density on the newer process node?

i'll order tomorrow morning but need to think tonight.

as for mobos, i've had asrock before and they've been solid. had bad experiences with 3 different gigabyte mobos though. never had MSI.

Yeah everyone has different experiences. I'd get Gigabyte or MSI if it were me.

Didn't think too much about it, but the 3570K is definitely a better choice. They overclock well to ~4.5Ghz or so. Heat only becomes an issue for the highest overclocks, and bare in mind the IPC is higher for Ivybridge so 4.5ghz IB is similar to 4.7ghz or so on SB.

question, lucic virtu is that load balancing for gpus right?

if i had a mobo that supports that, would it work between the onchip gpu as well as mine?

was looking at this

Its so you can use the onboard graphics and a discrete graphics card.

It's on all Z68/Z77 boards.

That one looks okay. Not sure its worth the extra over the MSI?

ta guys

now just need to decide on a cooler. might try one of those closed loop water coolers. tried the other kind a few years ago and far too high maintenance for me :o

No maintenance required for them.

I would say that an air cooler of a similar price/cheaper tends to do the same job while being quieter. Of course if you dont like large headsinks the all-in-one watercoolers are good.

The heat on IB i5's chips only really goes nuts after 4.5Ghz :p even then 4.5Ghz is just over a 30% speed increase. As beejjacobs said top air cooling usually does a better/same performance than the price you pay for a closed waterloop cooler.

if you have a £70~ budget get either the Alepnfohn K2, the Phanteks PH14CE or the noctua NHD-14. If you have a budget of less than £70 just say so since we can recommend pretty decent lower tier cooling :) (make sure you're case has up to 170mm clearance though!)

I just use the stock cooler; I don't overclock and the case came with acoustic padding fitted. :)
