After recently buying an ssd i found out that my nice little mobo is getting along in its years and not really up to the job anymore, Its a Gigabyte EX58 DS4 which i bought nearly 3 years ago now as the i7's had only just been released, however the lack of sata 6Gb/s and usb 3 as well as some poor bios updates and the board not holding up as well as i hoped im now looking for an upgrade , will be pairing it with my i7 920 2.8ghz C0 stepping. hoping to overclock in the future but currently on a bit of an electricity budget.

can anyone suggest alternatives or which one is better out of the

Asus X58 Sabertooth

Asus P6X58D-E

£170 mass budget but the cheaper the better

I've got the Sabertooth and it is rock solid. Never had one problem with it at all.
It got my 950 up to 4.2Ghz with out any issues at all.
They both use the same SATA 6Gbps controller so one won't perform better in that respect.
Sabertooth has my vote! Oh its also better looking :)

Don't expect full speed Sata 3 performance though. Both boards use the terrible Marvell 9128 controller to supply Sata 3 and it is much slower than native Intel controllers. Mine can't even keep up with a Sata 2 SSD and is a hell of a lot slower than the Sata 2 provided by the Intel chipset on my board.

well thats very disappointing as im not looking to move sockets for at least another 2 years :(

im assuming i would still see a noticeable difference using a sata 3ssd with a newer mobo compared to my current model.

The native SATA 2 ports max out at ~280MB/s.

Native SATA 3 ports double that.

Those speeds are, of course, subject to the limitations of the SSD.

There's a difference but how "noticeable" it is I couldn't say.

Maybe Windows and other applications/games will load a few seconds faster.

I would say that in itself is hardly reason to jump platforms.

280MB/s is hardly slow.

it is more the fact my new ssd will be able to hit 550mb/s and i will see just over half that speed, its not really jumping platforms when im just upgrading my motherboard is it ?

Was in similar situation myself, at the beginning of the year.

My Gigabyte EX58-UD5 died, so I sold my i7 920, plus spare 1366 board on the bay, & went over to a 2500K & Asrock Z68 board.

The 1155 socket is to a degree more future proof, pci-e 3.0, support for Ivybridge, etc, will last me at least 2 years.

i only have sata 2 ports currently hence looking for an upgrade , i did consider those controller cards though , the marvel controller cant be too bad as they are being sold ,

I would like to upgrade but am going to uni in a week or so and money will likely be tight so cant warrant such a large upgrade at this point.

They're based on a Marvell (or similar controller) so are unlikely to be better than the Marvell SATA 3 ports the OP already has.

It'll be a better option than replacing his current board. But then again saying that, on some reviews I've seen the speeds can vary a lot, from speeds better than SATA 2 to speeds that don't even reach SATA 2 speeds.

Personally I would just carry on using your native ports the X58 controls for best performance, and then when you change the socket later on you'll also get a nice SSD speed increase as well as a CPU performance increase ;).

Sorry, I was confusing you with someone else who has a S1366 board with the Marvell SATA 3 ports.

I've not seen anyone with a good word to say about the Marvell controller.

Some people seem to get better speeds with a native SATA 2 port than a Marvell SATA 3 port.

would i see a good change if i was to buy a controller , i understand the marvels are considered as a bad option but surely sata 3 > sata 2 ?

I honestly wouldn't bother with the controller cards, you won't see full SSD speeds and at best it'll probably be only a tad faster than SATA 2.

They're only being sold as the average consumer generally won't be able to tell the speed difference .
