Had my mod 1 yesterday and failed for not getting up to speed on the hazard avoidance. :o Clocked 48Km/h. Absolutely gutted. Other than that I had a clean sheet. The best part is I just found out that they're changing the test in a few weeks to allow a 5% tolerance in reaching the speed.

It probably won't get anywhere but I wrote a complaint to the DSA to ask why I should pay again when doing the same maneuver at the same speed in a few weeks time would mean I pass.

Need to get a cancellation asap! Next available on the DSA site is May! :(

Sucks :(

I'm assuming you've been taught to knock the throttle off as soon as you're through the trap? Don't know what bike you're doing it on, but on a CBF500, just whack it open in 2nd when you come off the curve and shut it again once through the trap.

Guy I was with on mine clocked 63km/h on that method. :) Keep positive, you'll do it.

Gutted.

On my first attempt at the avoidance I was at 48 also.

The second go round I hit 69, clipped the cone (not knocking it over) and had to to an emergency stop to finish, got a minor for "Bike Control".

It is a stupid part of the test really.

Yeah, I got it fine on the Emergency Stop @ 54kmh first time. I was sure I was going quick enough on the second attempt of the HA (engine noisier). The only thing I can think of is that I rolled off the throttle just slightly early and the engine braking in 2nd scrubbed off a load of speed.

Shame it's going to cost with the training company for half a day on the bike again. I'm tempted to take my z750 on a trailer but the turning circle isn't great

Had my 2nd attempt today and passed!

55kmh and 59kmh on the hazard avoidance and emergency stop respectively. No chances taken this time :D

Mod 2 next week.

They do but in most cases your your looking at the piddling cones your meant to avoid and swerve round not down at your clocks (which unlike a car requires a complete re-focus of your vision on a bike depending on the seating position) Plus he was only 2kph too slow for the speed so it really was a bit rubbish to fail on that.

Loads of people fail on this. I didn't reach the speed on the first attempt, so on the second I thought 'I'm not gonna fail because of this' and bloody HAMMERED it.

Nice one!

I found Mod 2 much easier than all the messing around for Mod 1.
Just ride around for 35-40mins with the examiner behind you, simples.

Good luck!

I'm a bit lost here, bikes don't have speedos?

There isn't time to look at the speedo, you have to open the throttle quite hard in 2nd after coming out of a bend, and look where you are going, or you will hit the cone.

I failed for hitting the cone, doesn't help it was a day after I skidded my bike down the road, and was doing the test on my own bike so didn't want to do it again. Thing is I can swerve normally to avoid potholes and stones on the road have done countless times now, forcing a swerve is something I have trouble with.

Feel bad for you man. I remember my mod 1 last year, I was so expecting to fail the u turn but by luck i nailed it. If you breezed through the rest of the test you should be fine on this technically, really. If I could offer some advice? give it lots of power out of the bend in 2nd gear (will feel fast) as soon as you go over the speed sensor take your hand off the throttle completely, and then brake into the cones nice and steady.

Grats on passing :) how many mods are there ? lol

Can i ask how much does the theory test mod 1 and mod 2 cost ?

I am 26 with a cbt i would like to do my direct access some time this year.

Is there any restrictions on what bike i can use if i pass my DAS?

My m8s keep telling me different prices and i mite be limited to under 600cc even if i am 26 and if i pass my DAS.

Thank you.

If you pass your DAS, you can ride a bike with any size of engine. It's only if you're under 21 (or choose to do the restricted test) that you are restricted to a 33hp bike for two years.

A 600cc sports bike still has the potential to reach double the speed limit or more, and ridden badly will kill you just as quick as a 1 liter bike.

I've never really understood this '600s are ok, but 1000s are for grown-ups' mentality.

I'm not an experienced rider, I've held my full license for about 8 months now, but in that time I've ridden a fair bit of stuff, naked 600s, sports 600s, litre tourers, fireblades, BMW 1300s etc.

They were all mental and perfectly capable of killing you very quickly if you decided to have a brain-whoopsie.

The principle difference between them that an inexperiend rider might find a challange is weight - for the stuff I've ridden, bigger capacity = heavier. And that just means you've got to know what you're doing when you're handling it.
